Reports To: Director of Education

Wage Band: Assistant Level I

Compensation: $23.00 - $25.00 per hour*

Position Summary: The Community Programs Specialist supports the Education Division with multiple components of educational program design, planning and delivery at the Museum campus and occasional off-site locations. Responsibilities include development and scheduling of community programs on- and off-site, processing payments, creating financial and data reports, and supporting the set-up, breakdown and facilitation of programs.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • Plan, schedule, and execute community programs that are mission-aligned.
  • Works with Director of Education to create a program portfolio for the science & nature-based learning offered at the Museum and Sea Center. This programming includes on-site exhibit-related, seasonal programs for the general public, and off-site outreach programming. These events could include lectures, films, classes, field trips, and family-focused festivals at both campuses.
  • Actively develop and maintain community contacts and relationships to seed new opportunities for Museum outreach and educational programming.
  • Support set-up, breakdown and inventory maintenance of all supply and curriculum for community educational programs.
  • Act as main contact with community members and other organizations and institutions interested in program development.
  • Maintains good interdepartmental connections to ensure that programs complement and reinforce one another and work toward mutual goals.
  • Work with Events Manager and Facilities to reserve dedicated spaces at the Museum campus and complete work orders with all requests for any needed program equipment set up.
  • Track and analyze program data for use in Museum administration and development reports, as needed. Contributes to grant applications and reports as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Marketing Division to update web pages and promotional materials of Museum-based community education programs.
  • Participate in and contribute to Education Division and select Museum meetings.
  • Contributes to a positive guest experience by greeting and addressing any questions when encountering guests as they navigate through the Museum and Sea Center.
  • Supports the Museum’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion for fellow staff, guests and the community.
  • May perform other duties as needed.

Essential Requirements: 

  • Proven success planning, scheduling, and executing community events.
  • Willingness and capacity to efficiently learn and facilitate all public programming.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and follow-through (in-person, by phone & through email) with community partners, staff, volunteers, and the general public.
  • Must be available to work approximately 20 hours per week, which would include occasional weekends, some early mornings, and some late evenings throughout the year.
  • Proven ability to provide excellent customer service in a flexible, highly demanding arena.
  • Even temperament, comfortable with last minute changes.
  • Must be professional and polite while working with Museum guests.
  • Dedicated to creating and implementing inclusive programming, considering the diverse community we serve.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Spanish fluency, written and oral, a plus.
  • Familiarity and knowledge on inquiry-based learning and experiential teaching techniques and practices.
  • Comfortability conducting outreach with local organizations.
  • Awareness of and interest in current events and developments in the local area, specifically around environmental and conservation science.

Work Environment:

  • Significant telephone and computer work (repetitive movement-typing).
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending with occasional lifting of light to loads (10-20 lbs.).
  • Frequently outdoors on Museum property and in exhibit halls, etc.
  • Works with small and large groups (up to 300 people).
  • Works in a shared, open office setting.

*The pay range above represents the budgeted range for a new hire, encompassing the minimum and maximum rates. Placement within this range will depend on factors such as specific skills, qualifications, relevant years of experience, and alignment with the salaries of current employees in similar roles. In most cases, newly hired employees are placed below the midpoint of the range.
