Overview:
This position leads, oversees and participates in the operation of complex recharge and water distribution systems including operating valves, pumps, canals, turnouts, and gates to distribute water to reservoirs, percolation ponds, reclamation systems, channels, and recharge facilities. Other duties include: monitoring the operations of raw water surface irrigation usage, gauge reservoir inflows and stream flows, reading and interpreting a variety of gauges, meters, and electronic monitoring devices, collecting, and analyzing data and preparing reports, patrolling assigned routes and geographic areas, observing areas which require maintenance, monitoring stream flows and report problems, monitoring seepage from dams and measuring and recording readings from open wells, piezometers, and weirs.
This position you will work one weekend every five weeks, rotating holidays, and at times 12-hour day or night shifts. This position also requires 24-hour on-call responsibilities in rotating one-week durations.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Monitor the operations of a recycled water system and raw water surface irrigation usage; monitor reservoir inflows and stream flows.
- Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications. Train assigned employees in their areas of work including water distribution and operation methods, procedures, and techniques. Interpret, prepare, maintain, and update a variety of maps, charts, graphs, photographs, records, and reports. Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in a timely manner; interface with regulatory agencies as needed.
- Operate valves, pumps, canals, turnouts, and gates to distribute water from reservoirs, percolation ponds, reclamation systems, channels, and recharge facilities.
- Read and interpret a variety of gauges, meters, and electronic monitoring devices; collect and analyze data and prepare reports using meteorological and hydrographic devices. Adjust chemical feeding equipment to appropriate levels to ensure appropriate balance and distribution of chemicals.
- Plan, direct, and participate in the inspection of raw water facilities and equipment, initiate maintenance, and repair requests.

Ideal Experience:
Five (5) years of experience operating a water distribution and treated water delivery system.Ideal Skills and Abilities:
- Train, organize, assign, and review the work of staff.
- Independently perform the most difficult water distribution and system operations.
- Operate water distribution facilities according to Valley Water’s needs.
- Interpret, explain, and enforce department policies and procedures.
- Read and interpret maps, charts, and graphs.
- Ensure adherence to applicable laws, ordinances, and rules to water distribution operations.
- Prepare clear and concise reports.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Ideal Knowledge:

- Principles, practices, and responsibilities involved in leading the work of assigned staff.
Thorough Knowledge of:
- Operations, services, and activities of a raw water distribution system.
- Methods and techniques of utilizing a variety of measuring devices and recording data.
- Operational characteristics of water distribution equipment and tools.
- Common desktop software and applications.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
- Operational principles of valves, pumps, meters, and other mechanical devices.
- Mathematical principles including algebra and trigonometry.
- Operational characteristics of all Valley Water groundwater recharge facilities.
- Operational characteristics of all valley Water reservoirs and diversion structures.
- State Fish and Wildlife, Federal National Marine Fisheries, State Water Quality Control Board, and Valley Water policies.
Ideal Training and Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Raw Water Field Operations and Pipeline Maintenance Unit (Position Code 7)
Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.
This position requires the individual to be onsite and is typically not a teleworking position.
