Budget Amount : Position is budgeted up to $22.49 hourly, commensurate with related education and experience.
Primary Purpose
Performs various skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the repair, diagnostics, and maintenance of vehicles and heavy equipment; responds to road calls in the field for emergency repairs.
Essential Job Functions
- Diagnoses and troubleshoots repairs needed; performs computer testing on electronic systems; solicits quotes or bids from appropriate vendors for materials, supplies and services required for the maintenance; sublets units to vendors for warranty work; obtains purchases orders; receives parts and materials needed and schedules maintenance; maintains daily log of work performed.
- Overhauls gasoline or diesel engines; installs clutches; realigns front ends; performs necessary welding; disassembles engines; inspects parts for wear and damage; repairs or replaces parts and reassembles engines; overhauls regulator and starter systems; rebuilds carburetors, fuel pumps, water pumps, distributors and other accessories; tunes engines; repairs air conditioning systems, brake systems, front and rear suspensions, steering components and exhaust systems; repairs flat tires; checks fuel and fluid levels and fills as needed; operates diagnostic equipment.
- Assists other mechanics on major jobs and helps with snow removal; replaces windows and windshields; test drives equipment or vehicle after work is performed to ensure proper operation.
- Maintains the cleanliness of the shop area; ensures proper care and follows established safety protocols in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
Knowledge / Skills :
This is a journey level position providing the repair and maintenance of either gasoline or diesel powered equipment.

Working Conditions :
Work is performed in both a repair shop or in a field location in varied weather conditions with exposure to dust, fumes, gases, airborne particles, chemicals, allergens, and extreme heat or cold. Work involves high risk and potentially dangerous situations working near equipment and machinery and exposure to excessive noise. The use of protective clothing, equipment, devices and materials is required. Work requires the ability to stand, walk, reach with hands or arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear, and smell; clarity of vision at short and long distance; and the ability to lift up to 100lbs. Work schedule may include early morning, evening and weekend hours. Will be subject to random drug screening.
Conditions of Employment :
Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug / alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class A or B or Class 5 or D Driver's License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his / her duties. Candidate must obtain and / or maintain all certifications required.
