Distinguishing Features of the Class:
An employee in this class performs general maintenance and repair work in a variety of building and mechanical craft areas such as electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, and masonry. Employees may work independently or assist others in maintenance activities. Assignments are usually received verbally and may be accompanied by sketches, diagrams, or operating instructions. In addition, the work may involve the operation of a truck, automobile or other automotive equipment. Employees may devise methods for accomplishing assigned tasks and work with some independence. Supervision over subordinates may be required. All work is subject to inspection in progress and upon completion by maintenance supervisory personnel. The incumbent does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities:
- Performs minor electrical work such as wiring lights, installing new receptacles, wiring switches, motors, etc.;
- Installs, maintains, and repairs general plumbing fixtures such as sinks, faucets, toilets, drain lines, etc;
- Performs minor repairs to items such as windows, doors, floors, walls, etc;
- Assists in mechanical repairs to misc. machinery such as compressors, cpumps, fans, belts, etc.;
- Helps maintain and repair boilers and associated steam lines, traps, calves, etc. for efficient operation;
- Performs other tasks in related areas such as pouring concrete, minor masonry work, painting, etc.;
- Takes part in general grounds maintenance activities;
- May need to lift up to 50 pounds;
- May need to climb ladders to perform job tasks;
- May operate trucks, automobiles, air compressors, and other motorized equipment;
- May supervise and participate in work with subordinate staff.

Good knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods and practices of the trade areas; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade areas; mechanical aptitude; ability to understands and follow oral and written instructions; ability to develop skill in the trade areas as they relate to the job; ability to work well with others.
Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years experience in building maintenance activ ities or in one or more of the standard trads such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical. If the position requires, candidate must possess a valid NYS Driver's License at the time of application, maintained throughout employment.
A civil service examination is required for this position to reach a non-probationary status. Incumbent can be provisionally appointed until test is offered through Franklin County. Residency is waived for this position.
