What are the responsibilities and job description for the Propulsion Systems Engineer position at Saronic?
Saronic Technologies is a leader in revolutionizing defense autonomy at sea, dedicated to developing state-of-the-art solutions that enhance maritime operations for the Department of Defense (DoD) through autonomous and intelligent platforms.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a talented Propulsion Systems Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and optimizing fluid-based propulsion systems for our autonomous surface vessels. This includes working with fluid dynamics, pumps, thrusters, and other key fluid systems integral to the vessel's propulsion and power generation. Your work will ensure the system's efficiency, safety, and reliability, with a specific focus on fluid interactions and propulsion performance in marine environments.
\n- Design and develop propulsion systems that rely on fluid dynamics, including the design of propellers, pumps, thrusters, and other fluid-based components.
- Optimize fluid flow paths and mechanical systems for maximum efficiency, minimal drag, and reliable operation in varying marine environments.
- Perform fluid dynamics simulations and analyses to optimize propulsion components, ensuring high performance while considering energy consumption and operational parameters.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to integrate fluid-based propulsion systems into the broader autonomous vessel design.
- Conduct performance analysis, simulations, and testing to validate fluid-based propulsion systems, ensuring they meet mission-specific performance standards.
- Use advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools to predict fluid behavior, improve system efficiency, and reduce drag on the vessel.
- Develop and execute testing protocols to validate fluid systems and ensure they perform effectively under a range of sea conditions, including varying speeds, operational loads, and environmental challenges.
- Analyze test data to identify inefficiencies or potential system failures and develop corrective solutions to improve system reliability and performance.
- Participate in field testing and real-world operational assessments to refine and optimize fluid-based propulsion systems.
- Use fluid dynamics models, including computational tools like ANSYS Fluent to enhance fluid flow, optimize thrust generation, and ensure efficient power transfer through the propulsion system.
- Identify and implement innovative solutions to improve fluid system performance, energy efficiency, and overall propulsion reliability.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a related field with a strong foundation in fluid mechanics.
- 3 years of experience in the design, analysis, and optimization of fluid systems, especially within marine propulsion or energy systems.
- Hands-on experience with fluid dynamics modeling, pump and thruster systems, and propulsion technologies in marine or aerospace industries.
- Experience using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, COMSOL) to simulate fluid flow and optimize system performance.
- Strong understanding of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and energy conversion in relation to propulsion systems.
- Experience designing and testing fluid-based propulsion systems, including pumps, thrusters, and flow management components.
