The purpose of the Social Worker - Child Protective Services - Initial Assessment is to assess client needs and to develop, coordinate, and implement intervention and safety services for children in need of protection for the Sauk County Department of Human Services.

Essential Duties

  • Investigate reports of child abuse and/or neglect and assess for immediate safety threats or risks to safety.
  • Implement protective plans such as out of home placement, referrals to community services, and/or court involvement.
  • Conduct thorough assessments to determine the range of services needed by these individuals and their families for preventative, remedial, or rehabilitative services through:
    • Interviews
    • Home visits
    • Collateral investigations
  • Provide supervision and case management for families during assessment prior to case transfer to the Child Protective Services Social Worker.
  • Explain the scope of agency and community services and discuss the client’s rights and responsibilities in relation to the use of such services.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of documents such a:
    • Access reports
    • Case records
    • Contact notes
    • Initial assessments
    • Law enforcement referral intake
    • Safety plans
    • Protective Plans
    • Permanency Plans
    • Rate settings
    • Child and Adolescent Needs assessment
    • Court reports
    • State and agency forms and reviews
    • County and departmental reimbursement forms
  • Participate in preparation, attend and testify in court as needed
  • Provide training to law enforcement, schools, and others on scope of practice in child protective services.
  • Participate in committees, task forces, and multidisciplinary teams as assigned.
  • Provide backup coverage to other Social Workers or cases as needed.
  • And other duties as assigned.
Required Working Hours
Standard working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am until 4:30 pm. Please note these hours are subject to change and additional hours may be needed or required. Compensation for additional hours beyond normal working hours are subject to applicable state and federal regulations.

Minimum Training and Education

Required:

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or another related field

1 year of child welfare experience

Complete 30 hours of intake training under Wisconsin Statutes Chapter 48.06 and 938.06 within 6 months of start date

Complete pre-service and ongoing foundation trainings within 2 years of hire, if not previously completed

Licenses/Certifications:

Wisconsin State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License

Obtain a Wisconsin State Social Work License within 6 months of start date

Preferred:
Wisconsin State Social Work License
2 years of Wisconsin Child Protective Services experience
Experience in investigation, forensic interviewing, and abuse and neglect reporting

Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
