Seasonal Position

Position Summary

The Groundskeeper is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the grounds and is also responsible for the lawn care and snow removal on tribal housing sites and office buildings. The Groundskeeper plays a crucial role in maintaining the aesthetic appeal, safety, and functionality of tribal housing properties, contributing to the well-being and satisfaction of residents and visitors alike.

Job Duties

The following include, but are not limited to essential functions of the position.

  • Maintains driveways, walkways, roofs, doorways, gates and handicap ramps in the summer and winter - snow removal and lawn care.
  • Mow lawns, trim hedges, prune trees and shrubs, and maintain flowerbeds to ensure a well-groomed appearance of the property.
  • Performs routine, non-machine tasks; removes trash, trims bushes, rakes leaves.
  • Spreads and levels dirt and gravel using pick and shovel.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the grounds for potential safety hazards such as uneven walkways, fallen branches, or damaged fencing, and takes corrective action as needed.
  • Reports maintenance issues or concerns related to the grounds to the Construction Manager for resolution.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills And Abilities

  • To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following:
  • Must be able to read and comprehend simple instructions.
  • Must be able to interpret and follow OSHA safety rules.
  • Must be able to maintain and operate lawn mowers, snow plow trucks, weed whips.
  • Must be able to drive a truck and pull a trailer.
  • Must be proficient in landscaping techniques such as mowing, edging, pruning, and planting to maintain the appearance of lawns, gardens, and other green spaces.
  • Ability to notice and address small issues before they become larger problems, such as identifying pests, weeds, or irrigation leaks early on.
  • Capacity to troubleshoot and resolve common groundskeeping challenges independently, such as diagnosing equipment malfunctions or implementing effective pest control measures.
  • Must be able to work with minimal to no supervision.
  • Must be available for work weekends, holidays, and nights and on call during winter season.
  • Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must maintain confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience operating snow plow vehicles and law care equipment.
  • Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of irrigation systems and the ability to inspect, repair, and adjust sprinklers and drip systems to ensure proper watering of plants and lawns.

Certification(s) and/or Licenses Required

  • Must have chauffeurs license.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department
  • Must comply with annual driver license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department.
  • Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

May require very heavy lifting of objects over 100 pounds with team or dual lifting and frequent lifting/carrying of more than 50 pounds. Physical factors include constant standing, walking; frequent carrying/lifting, pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, manual handling, use of hearing, bending; occasional sitting, use of smell, near/midrange/vision, depth perception, and color/field of vision. Working conditions include constant exposure to extreme weather, heat/cold, wet/humidity, noise and vibration and occasional exposure to air quality. Protective equipment clothing needed to perform job include hard hat, safety glasses, protective footwear and other protective equipment needed to perform functions of position.
