Job Description
Savannah River National Laboratory's (SRNL) Environmental and Legacy Management (ELM) directorate is seeking a Microbiological/Chemical Engineer to work in the Bio & Analytical Sciences organization. This position is focused on performing, assisting, and guiding microbiological research to lower costs of biomanufacturing technologies. This position will work with SRNL as well as industry and research partners to design and develop innovative solutions which advance microbiological and biomanufacturing applications.
Responsibilities
The engineer will function as a member of an interdisciplinary research team to collaboratively develop projects, proposals, research analyses, manuscripts, and reports. The R&D team may consist of scientists and engineers within SRNL as well as outside the lab or within other organizations. Work scope may include various areas of industrial microbiology and energy applications, including but not limited to biofuel, biogas, bio-power, thermochemical (catalytic) as well as biochemical conversion platforms. Focus will also include economic comparative evaluations regarding relevant processes, based on techno-economic principles.

SRNL’s Environmental & Legacy Management (ELM) Directorate closely collaborates with the Department of Energy (DOE) and site contractors to develop, mature, and apply science and technology needed to resolve environmental challenges and advance legacy management missions. As the lead laboratory for Environmental Management (DOE-EM) and Legacy Management (DOE-LM), SRNL applies our talent and expertise to develop and deploy innovative approaches and technologies to reduce risk, cost, and schedule of environmental cleanup and nuclear material processing. Additionally, ELM is using our competencies to develop new materials and processes for a range of clean energy applications.

Successful Candidates Will
- Have proficiency in one or more of the following relevant technical skill sets:
- Experience in the design and economic assessment of chemical and/or microbiological processes.
- Experience in project development
- Practice investigative techniques to determine the best approach.
- Think critically, analyze data, and integrate these skills into effective experimental design, execution, and reporting.
- Ability to scope technical tasks and develop creative solutions.
- Create internal alliances outside the immediate team or department.
- Effectively communicate (verbal & written) technical results and interface with customers.
- Understand how their role relates to others on the team and the role of the team in supporting the ELM mission.
- Develop expertise within their discipline.
- Develop novel solutions and creative proposals to secure additional research funding.
- Gain proficiency with site policies and testing protocols.
- Perform program management and laboratory custodianship responsibilities.
- May mentor and/or train early-career engineers and scientists.
- Help others manage departmental change.
- Work safely with particular attention to quality.
- Comply with all policies and standards.
Minimum Qualifications:
- MS in Chemical Engineering, Microbiology or Biochemistry and 5-7 years’ experience with R&D and/or commercial Biomanufacturing or similar subject
- PhD in Chemical Engineering, Microbiology or Biochemistry and 2-4 years of relevant experience
- Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance for which, U.S. citizenship is legally required.
