    Provide first aid and emergency health assistance to students, maintain health room, update and maintain student health records, administer student medication under physician's directions, provide appropriate information to parents and students.

    • Establishes and maintains confidential student health records.
    • Maintains health office and facilities in a clean, attractive and orderly condition.
    • Records current information on physical, screening, medications, serious illnesses.
    • Deliver diabetes care for students with type I diabetes. Including glucose testing, ketone testing, and utilizing insulin pump or insulin pen to administer insulin.
    • Administer medication to students using district policy guidelines.
    • Documentmedication administration on the Medication Administration Record.
    • Secure all medication.
    • Maintains lists of students with special health problems.
    • Reports child abuse to proper authorities.
    • Provides information to school and instructional staff on particular student health problems.
    • Provides first aid services and emergency assistance to students and others who are hurt or become ill at school. Treats minor cuts, bruises, splinters and bites.
    • Provides care maintaining Standard Precautions.
    • Contacts parents, paramedics and professional medical personnel as required by the nature of the emergency.
    • Maintain first aid kits and provide first aid supplies to staff.
    • Checks for lice and maintains appropriate records.
    • Calls parents/emergency contacts of injured or sick students.
    • Provide assistance with student grooming, toileting, personal hygiene and self care.
    • Catheterization and tube feeding of students as needed.
    • Implement student health/care plan.
    • Additional tasks in conjunction with service providers:
      • Schedule appointments for students with appropriate community resources.
      • Assist with resource material, ordering, filing, displaying, etc.
    • Evaluate records of transfer and new students to the district:
      • Assist in the distribution and collection of health appraisal forms.
      • Assist in collection of data for health inventories. Review health inventories upon their return and refer to the registered nurse, those pupils needing special follow up. Record information on appropriate records.
    • Health appraisal activities:
      • Observe and record pupil's behavior.
      • Participate in the scheduling of the screening programs in each building and assist in clinical setting (vision, hearing, immunizations and blood pressures).
      • Retest or refer to designated personnel pupils failing initial testing. Record screening program results, follow up activities and reports on appropriate records. Participate in selected follow up activities such as completion of referral forms, phone conferences with parents, communication with teachers as to results of test.
      • Inform administrator and teachers in each building of students with serious health problems.
      • Schedule immunizations and participate in their administration.
      • Maintain emergency file.
      • Greet all students who come to the health office seeking assistance.
      • Stay with ill or injured child until other help is available.
      • Under the direction of the school principal, follow exclusion procedures for illness.
      • If directed by administrator, transport sick or injured pupil home.
      • Record standardized information for cumulative records; ie health, vision, immunization, hearing, scoliosis, attendance, etc. on a building basis.
      • Evaluate pupil records to obtain information for health personnel use: ie. Immunization history to initiate annual report as mandated by WI Division of Health on a building basis.
      • Prepare various reports for parents and school personnel; ie accident reports.
      • Provide appropriate staff with student medical concerns.
      • Participate in developing student health care plans.
    • Work cooperatively with the secretarial staff and provide assistance as required.
    • Perform other duties as assigned. These may vary from building to building.

    Knowledge Of:

    • Basic first aid, CPR and emergency response procedures.
    • Basic record keeping techniques.
    • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
    • Health problems of school children.
    • Personal hygiene practices.
    • Basic concepts of child and teenage development and behavior.
    • Clean and sterile treatment techniques.
    • Knowledge of the school management software and Microsoft Office software.

    Ability To:

    • Compile and maintain accurate and complete student health records in paper and electronic.
    • Maintain emotional control under difficult situations and effectively react to emergencies.
    • Provide first aid and emergency assistance as needed.
    • Demonstrate a patient, understanding and receptive attitude toward children with an illness or injury.
    • Work confidentially with discretion.
    • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
    • Understand and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
    • Recognize the need to provide for personal privacy and dignity of the student.
    • Ability to perform responsible office work involving independent judgment and initiative.
    • Knowledge of modern office methods, departmental programs, operations and policies.
    • Knowledge of business English, spelling and composition.
    • Ability to explain and interpret the school policies to employees and the public.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective public and working relationships.
    • Ability to maintain accurate and complete records and prepare clear and detailed reports.
    • Must have a genuine concern for people; be tolerant of their differences and points of view, emotionally secure and able and willing to give of themselves.
    • Meet health requirements of the district.
    • Be able to communicate orally and in writing with pupils and their families.
    • Knowledgeable in child and teenage holistic health care.
    • Access to and knowledgeable in emergency procedures.

    Education and Experience:

    • High school diploma.
    • Proof of qualifications for highly certified status for No Child Left Behind.
    • Wisconsin LPN license preferred.
    • Maintain CPR and Red Cross First Aid certification.
    • Experience with type I diabetes management preferred.

    Working Conditions/Environment:

    • Primarily office environment; may be any place on school grounds if emergency warrants it.
    • Exposure to contact with blood and other body fluids utilizing standard precautions.
    • May have exposure to disinfectants and other cleaning solutions.
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    Physical Abilities:

    • Lifting and moving objects up to 50 pounds.
    • Will be determined by position requirements and noted on posting.
