Special Education Assistant: Monday - Friday / 35.5 hours per week / 180 days per year

Job Purpose:

Under direct supervision of a special education and/or regular education classroom teacher, provides assistance to students performing a variety of tasks relating to the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in an educational setting.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities described below are considered the essential functions of the position.   • Assist students either individually or in groups in core elective content areas based on student scheduling including, therapy, vocational training, basic skills, feeding, adaptive physical education, learning centers, etc.
  • Supervise, escort and assist students when entering or leaving the building to ensure the safety of students in and outside of the building including hallways, playgrounds, lunchrooms, and bathroom; attend to personal hygiene of the student; assist with teaching personal hygiene practices.
  • Contribute to support and modification of student's behavior within and outside the classroom, including crisis intervention.
  • Transport, assist in lifting, moving and/or assist students in wheelchairs or students utilizing adaptive equipment and assist others in lifting, transferring, moving positioning and securing students.
  • Participate and assist under the direction of the teacher(s) as needed in related education functions including, but not limited to field trips, educational planning, assessment, data compilation and accommodations for students.
  • Work towards the independence of the student in any possible area/s.
  • Assist in planning, gathering, preparation and organizing classroom materials for various curricular areas and help develop related activities, including visual aids.
  • Some assignments may involve specialized certification and/or regular assistance performing medically necessary activities to ensure the wellbeing of the students, which may include gastrostomy (gtube) feedings, dispensing/ administering some medications, nebulizer/inhaler/oxygen treatments, etc.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Strong classroom management skills and experience working with children, particularly those with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of Individualized Education Programs (IEP) and behavior management techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with educators and support staff.
  • Experience in special education, including familiarity with autism and developmental disabilities.
  • Preferred qualifications include a background in early childhood education and relevant certifications, such as Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

Education and experience

  • Must possess a high-school degree or equivalent.
  • Preference of a minimum of 1 year working with children. Prefer experience in working with children with special needs.
  • Prefer experience in the education field.

Licenses and Certifications

  • DPI Special Education License required. We can apply on your behalf if you don’t currently hold this license.
  • Red Cross training and/or CPR/AED training preferred.
  • CPI certification must be passed shortly following start date and refreshed annually.
