What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Education Camp Instructor position at Schooner Day Camp?

Gather New Haven seeks a Seasonal Coastal Environmental Educator with Schooner Camp, a summer day camp for ages 6-14. Camp offers land and sea based programming on New Haven's unique coastline, based out of the Sound School and the Long Wharf Nature Preserve. The goal is to provide a dynamic and fun educational experience for 88 children each week. Activities pique an interest in coastal ecosystems, marine biology, inspire children to be stewards of their environment, provide a fun and safe summer experience and offer sailing instruction for older campers. Staff develop and lead activities for groups of 14-16 campers and ensure the safe operation, instruction, and communication of camp activities in accordance with the camp mission, policies and procedures. Experience in working with school age children, creating engaging hands on environmental education curriculum and the desire to impact a child's life in an outdoor setting desired. We are looking for a seasoned Environmental Educator with vast experience in coastal waterway and aquaculture teaching to guide, lead and assist in teaching daily lessons and to create themed programs,, and support general counselors daily activity plans. Abide by, model and ensure others adhere to camp policies and procedures. Ensure a high level of standards in all programs, activities and specialty events. Understanding of and development of environmental education with a focus on coastal water based curriculum. Provide support to counselors and campers when challenges arise. Motivate campers and ensure mutual support and group-building during camp Promote character development through the camp program Participate in pre/post-camp interactions and communication with parents and campers Communicate regularly with Camp Director on all relevant camp matters Participate in and assist in delivering pre camp staff training. Acts as the onsite first aider. The above listed are a few of the expectations of the role of Program Director

Position Qualifications Preferred:

  • 20 or older with 2 seasons experience at a summer day camp or youth program in an administrative role

Position requires candidate to hold First Aider qualifications.

  • Demonstrated level of maturity and ability to handle all aspects of the position and potential issues associated with camp
  • Comfortable in supervising and supporting staff members
  • Background and experience suited to requirements of the position including knowledge in management coastal ecosystems and environmental conservation
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in working with youth and people of all ages with the ability to interact with adults and co-workers in a positive and professional manner
  • Positive attitude and approach to working with youth in ways that convey a deep understanding of developmental needs
  • Ability to be creative and flexible

Must be open to working in the heat, cold, sun and rain and giving it your all.

Current certification in First aid, CPR, Med certification. Possible recertification if needed in above certifications prior to start of camp. Experience in sailing or lifeguarding a plus. Work site is on Long Island Sound in New Haven, CT.

There will be pre camp meetings, and trainings prior to the all staff training. You must be available for the dates of June 16 to August 16 Monday thru Friday 8: 00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Compensation for position depends on experience.
