SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Dean of Academic Excellence reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and provides the vision, leadership, management, accountability, and direction for college-wide efforts to increase retention, completion and transfer rates, and student goal attainment at Schreiner University. The Dean will focus on building and maintaining strategic alignment of all phases of the University’s emerging student persistence and completion agenda through developed collaborative relationships with faculty, students, staff, and administrators.
The Dean provides overall leadership and coordination for services and programs within the Division including the services and activities of Learning Support Services and those of Student Success including tutoring, Office of Changing Global Societies, Office of Meaningful Work, Office of Purposeful Lives Center. In collaboration with Student Affairs and the Registrar, the Dean is integral to ensuring Advising and Career Development are on track and has responsibility for providing leadership for collaborative college planning and the implementation of a comprehensive retention plan.
The Dean will provide support for the ongoing Title V Advising Grant and lead the administrative functions of the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness. The Dean will serve as the primary leader for all academic support functions for the university.
The Dean provides leadership and supervision to each reporting unit using sound judgment and positive interpersonal skills and works effectively as a team with other members of the President’s administrative cabinet. This position evaluates all activities of reporting units in light of the University’s mission and values. Integrity in all aspects of work is essential. The Dean may be assigned other duties by the president or board of trustees.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Creates flexible and effective processes that constitute a dynamic, seamless, and efficient student experience with measurably successful outcomes.
- Oversees the First Year Learning experience in collaboration with the Director of Student Success.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators from across the institution to fulfill the institutional mission and strategic plan.
- Supports planning and project management in the Division of Academic Affairs.
- Collaborates to develop retention, completion, and student success strategies that support the University’s mission, meet student success goals, support learning outcomes, and other student performance-based standards required by local, regional, and federal sources.
- Collaborates to enhance and/or develop and implement best practices, processes, and procedures to effectively assess the needs of students, including the early identification of at-risk students, and works cooperatively with internal subject matter experts to develop appropriate intervention strategies and programs that will positively impact opportunities for the students’ academic, personal, and career success.
- Assists and provides support to the Director of the Title V Grant Director on fulfilling all grant goals and objectives.
- Provides direction and support for the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, ensuring all data report and deadlines are met to ensure compliance at the local, state, and national level.
- Collaborates to enhance student achievement of learning outcomes and co-curricular learning across academic affairs, student affairs, and career/workforce development in order to improve levels of student engagement, retention, satisfaction, and success.
- Provide input on annual updates to Academic Catalogs and Academic Calendars in consultation with the University’s Registrar, along with working collaboratively with the Provost and the Dean of Faculty with university planned Convocations, Honors and Awards Day, and Commencement.
- Works collaboratively with the Office of the President and other faculty with the university Honors program.
- Assists the SACS-COC Liaison, including writing prospectives and managing ongoing compliance more than every few years.
- Assists with the ongoing development and ensure successful submission of the Universities 5th Year and Decennial Report to SACS-COC.
- Responsible for overseeing assessment of the academic support offices.
- Will manage the Assessment and IRB process for the university.
- Responsible for updating and maintaining the Student Achievement and Student Success website.
- Identifies grant and scholarship opportunities that support student success.
- May be asked to teach courses for the university within Interdisciplinary Studies or within the individual’s academic discipline.
- Represent and promote Schreiner at appropriate conferences.
- Serve on University-wide Committees or represents the Provost as assigned.
- Attend weekly cabinet meetings and cabinet functions.
- Maintains faculty status and is required to attend all faculty meetings and remain active with faculty governance.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Provide leadership of on-going assessment activities in each reporting unit to integrate institutional effectiveness cycle and completion of goals and objectives.
- Represent the University with dignity, integrity and professionalism.
- Actively support and ensure opportunities for the professional development of staff.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- Doctoral degree in any related field of academics.
- Minimum of five years of experience in higher education, administrative setting.
- Experience with Academic Support and other areas noted above requiring oversight and direction
- Knowledge of laws and regulations affecting areas of responsibility.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong administrative and organizational skills.
- Commitment to working with colleagues as a team for the well-being of the entire university.
- Ability to work several tasks and projects concurrently.
- Proven understanding of current and emerging technologies.
- Demonstrated proficiency with financial and planning models.
- Service orientation and experience.
- Must have a valid Texas driver’s license, related insurance and good driving record.
