Join our as a and provide leadership for the Science Museum of Minnesota's youth camps and classes. This role leads a portfolio of programs including summer camp and other out of school time offerings. The Center for STEM Education specializes in STEM learning experiences for learners aged 6-12, but also provides experiences for youth of other ages and for adult learners. The Program Specialist for Summer Camps will develop annual and long-range work plans to nurture sustainable partnerships and meet the educational goals of campers and their families. The Program Specialist will also lead and participate in work teams to develop and improve systems, manage department assets, and create STEM learning experiences.

Work Environment : Collaborative office environment, active indoor and outdoor settings. Occasional travel in metro area and greater Minnesota.

Job Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Provides program leadership and serves as principle investigator for assigned program portfolio, which may include both fee-based programs and projects / grants.
  • Develops and prioritizes critical tasks and adjusts approach as needed to successfully fulfill deadlines and meet departmental needs.
  • Sets program goals in collaboration with department leadership, develops tactical and strategic plans to meet those goals and support departmental and divisional goals.
  • Develops annual program schedules and implements them to meet program goals.
  • Builds and sustains relationships with partners – both within and outside SMM, while maintaining a high level of communication. Considers the goals and available resources of both SMM and its audiences to design programs; balances advocating for the needs of external partners and the department.
  • Conducts large scale short, mid and long-range operational planning and budgeting. Creates and manages budgets and cost centers; directs spending within cost centers, regularly tracks and adjusts spending to meet program goals.
  • Leads translation of STEM concepts, evidence, and processes into equitable, relevant and compelling experiences to successfully meet the overall goals and objectives of project or program.
  • Leads departmental work teams in the development or improvement of STEM experiences and management of assets / systems. Represents the department in museum-wide teams and initiatives.
  • Identifies funding sources and writes grants, proposals, and reports for funders including foundations and corporations to grow program portfolio.
  • Stays updated on and applies trends and best practices in STEM education, including innovations in both formal and informal environments. Develops and participates in internal and external networks to build and sustain partnerships required for new program / project development.
  • Sets clear expectations for program delivery and scheduling. Delegates work and assigns responsibilities to team members in support of established project / program goals.
  • Handles elevated issues or concerns arising from program experiences or behavior of participants; mediates customer service concerns and resolves issues independently.
  • Delivers programs and instructs learners in formal and informal settings, pre-school to adult ages. Designs and delivers professional development and program training for SMM staff and other educators.
  • Plans and ensures sufficient marketing of programs, including maintaining web content and collaborating with marketing and customer relationship management teams
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Proven knowledge of best practices for STEM instruction, curriculum, and training design.
  • Proven knowledge of the nature of science, math, engineering and technology and science as inquiry and practical application and integration of STEM topics.
  • Proven experience instructing children and adults and managing behavior in formal and informal educational environments.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a non-profit organization or comparable environment, initiating and leading programs.
  • Experience working with and managing to budgets.
  • Customer Service experience highly valued.
  • Demonstrated understanding and practice of STEM equity and inclusion
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize tasks and problem solve while working in a collaborative team.
  • Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities.
  • Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.
  • Fluency in language(s) other than English valued (Hmong, Somali, Spanish).
  • Starting Compensation : $45,441 - $47,223 / year (Dependent on Qualifications; Compensation Grade 6)
