Rig Operator – Job Description
Duties & Responsibilities
- Work with a 3-5 person crew performing maintenance and repairs on oil & gas wells
- Ensure all crew members are at work on time and adequately prepared
- Drive crew truck
- Operate the rig safely in accordance with DOT regulations and those requested or designated by the customer
- Operate power swivel
- Pull and lay down rods, tubing, casing and other equipment as needed; understand job steps and how to arrange rods and tubing in derrick correctly
- Accurately perform torque calculations and specs
- Perform pipe tallying, rigging up and down, nipple up and down BOP units, and pipe handling
- Perform all required equipment inspections on workover rig, fall arrest systems, derrick and mud pumps
- Perform BOP inspection, testing, and installation as needed
- Ensure efficient maintenance of assigned rig and crew truck; perform daily inspection and maintenance of equipment
- Troubleshoot maintenance issues and recognize worn equipment; turn in maintenance requests for repair or replacement of equipment as needed
- Able to instruct Floorhands and Derrickhands in use of all rig and pumping/ safety equipment
- Able to keep work site, equipment, and tools clean and in good working condition
- Understand the rig's hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems
- Maintain productivity standards for all rig employees and adhere to all applicable government regulations for compliance
- Complete and turn in field tickets in a timely manner
- Responsible for training new crew members, specifically Floorhand-SSE's
- Work in the shop or assist in yard maintenance when necessary
- Assist in repairs and preparing workover rig for deployment when necessary
- Report any and all incidents to Rig Supervisor or Foreman immediately
- Service and maintain all equipment associated with rig
- Perform other various tasks as assigned by the Rig Supervisor or Foreman
Skills & Specifications
- Ability to work with a diverse team to achieve production and cost targets
- Works safely and adheres to all company guidelines, policies, procedures, all regulations, etc.
- Strong work ethic, punctual, and motivated
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced high-pressure environment
- Has basic computer skills; data entry into various electronic databases or the ability to learn
- Has basic knowledge of down hole production equipment
- Maintain good housekeeping in all areas of responsibility
- Has integrity, solid communication skills, and a positive attitude
- Attend and participate in daily and monthly safety meetings
- Report to work on time and fit for duty; able to work in all weather conditions
- Possess organizational and problem-solving skills
Education & Qualifications
- Possess a valid driver’s license, CDL a plus (may be required in some locations)
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Able to pass a pre-employment drug and background check
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited, state-certified program
- Certifications from trade schools and/or professional organizations are preferred
- Must be capable and willing to work overtime as required and participate in an on-call rotation
- Knowledgeable in operating and maintaining equipment within oil and gas facilities preferred
- Capable of lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to 50lbs
- Capable of rigorous outdoor activities with physical ability to work extended hours, climbing, bending, kneeling, squatting, working with arms extended above the head, twisting upper body, standing for long periods, working in confined spaces, exposure to extreme weather conditions, driving a vehicle, operation of forklifts and light industrial equipment
