The Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering at South Dakota State University is seeking two dynamic, self-guided individuals to serve as a Professional Academic Advisor to support the college’s academic programs in this critical role. This position is located in Brookings, SD, and is a 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.The Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering has six departments including Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Construction and Operations Management, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics, and Mechanical Engineering.South Dakota State University promotes access to and opportunities for all to benefit from and participate in education, research, and service, and SDSU is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to this land-grant mission of access.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop and coordinate activities to enhance academic success, retention, learning, and development of SDSU students.Responsibilities include:Advise a caseload of undergraduate students on academic matters ranging from selecting a program of study and developing academic plans to academic skill development, curricular and co-curricular engagement and financial well-being;Refer students to appropriate departmental offices, faculty, and support services for help with academic, personal, and career counseling, and financial aid support;Communicate University policies including general education, major and minor, and graduation requirements;Assist students in exploring career options related to their academic programs of study;Support students as they make the transition from high school to college;Maintain ongoing contact with advisees;Maintain detailed records of interactions with advisees;Deliver presentations about academic advising in classrooms and other settings;Coordinate advising programs or retention efforts, such as Summer Bridge advising or the campus partners liaison program;Contribute to the continuing development of the Jerome J. Lohr Advising Center through committee work and through collaboration with academic departments and other campus offices;Represent the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering at various University events and meetings.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:An earned Master’s degree by the position start date;Experience working with a varied population of undergraduate college students in a student-centered environment;Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position;Effective written communication skills; andEffective verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:An earned Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, or a related discipline;Three years of academic advising or related experience;Knowledge of activities designed to enhance student success and retention;Knowledge of student development/learning theory; andExperience applying proactive and Appreciative Advising strategies.BENEFITS:South Dakota State University offers a wide range of excellent benefits including medical, dental, and flexible benefits, retirement plans, compensation packages, paid holidays, and vacation leave.
