School of Education, Counseling & Human Development at South Dakota State University (SDSU) is growing! We are seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Elementary Education in Literacy to join our dynamic team. We are looking for a collaborative and innovative professional to join us with experience in elementary education (school or district level) to create, develop, and teach undergraduate K-8 curriculum and methods courses with a primary focus on literacy instruction across all grade levels. To contribute to the SDSU strategic plan, “Pathway to Premier 2023”, the selected candidate must maintain an active research agenda, publication record, and pursue external funding in literacy education and collaborate in further development of undergraduate and graduate programs in teacher education. The Teacher Education program is CAEP accredited and offers undergraduate programming in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Special Education, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, and Agricultural Education. This position is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track, benefit-eligible position with the opportunity for summer employment. The position is supervised by the Director of the School of Education, Counseling, and Human Development. RESPONSIBILITIES:Have an active and defined research agenda with plans for dissemination and potential for publication as well as actively seek external funding opportunities to support teaching and scholarship. Teach high quality courses in various formats (face-to-face, hybrid, and online), develop curriculum and mentor student teachers.Potential to collaborate with Faculty, Staff and students from heterogeneous backgrounds in an effort to create an environment in which any individual or group feels welcomed, respected, supported, valued and able to fully participate as their authentic selves and communicate across differences.Provide service to and with the program, school, college, and university committees and to the community through collaborations that may include, but are not limited to, organizing families and parents, specialists, administrators, teachers, and other stakeholders to maximize the academic, emotional, and personal growth and safety of students.Assist with the accreditation process for the education programs within the School of Education, Counseling and Human Development. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Earned doctoral degree (PhD or Ed.D) in Reading/Literacy Education, Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related field, with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework in literacy education by position start date. Minimum of three years elementary education teaching experience in kindergarten-8th grade.Experience in, or knowledge of the current science of reading.Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy, foundations of reading, and elementary or early childhood education.Research skills and potential for developing a productive research agenda in the area of literacy/reading education.Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.APPLICATION PROCESS: SDSU accepts applications through an online employment site.
