The Department of Geography & Geospatial Sciences at South Dakota State University seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin August 2024, with a specialization in Geographic Information Sciences (GISc). We are looking for a creative and innovative professional to help develop and grow our GISc program. This is a 9-month, full-time, benefit-eligible position, with a 40% to 60% teaching load. This position is supervised by the Department Head for Geography and Geospatial Sciences. The Department of Geography & Geospatial Sciences offers B.A/B.S. degrees in Geography, B.S. Geographic Information Sciences, B.S. Community and Regional Planning, M.S. degrees in Geography and Geography - GISc Specialization, and a Ph.D. in Geospatial Science and Engineering. The Department also houses the Geospatial Sciences Center of Excellence. RESPONSIBILITIES:Enthusiastic, creative, and innovative teaching and the ability to engage undergraduate and graduate students in the classroom as well as willing to include students in contractual and community projects.Assist the department in strengthening relationships with its own and complementary programs, including for example environmental GIS, urban planning, agricultural GIS, or business GIS. Use of Geographic Information System technologies such as Web GIS, AI/ML, cloud computing, big data analytics and UAS-based GIS to enhance learning and research outcomes.Ability to promote GIS to the campus community, the broader community, and business stakeholders.Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, including thesis and dissertation research.Develop a research program that includes external sources of funding, fosters university and community outreach, as well as collaboration within the department and university and publishes in peer-reviewed national and international journals.Participate as a contributing team member in University, College, and Department governance to include, but not limited to, professional service and outreach activities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Ph.D. in Geography or a closely related field by first day of employment.Knowledge of multiple, applied Geographic Information Science (GISc) technologies.
