The Engineering Extension Department at South Dakota State University (SDSU) is seeking a Safety Consultant with demonstrated effective communication, interpersonal relations, and motivational skills. The Safety Consultant will serve as a resource to business and industry within South Dakota by effectively implementing the requirements of the Federal OSHA Consultation Program grant. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 12 month, full-time, benefit-eligible position.The mission of the SDSU Engineering Extension is to effectively implement the requirements of the Federal OSHA Consultation Program grant which is designed to assist private sector small and medium-sized employers with safety and health program assessments. Active employer involvement reduces direct and indirect costs and benefits economic development. The OSHA On-site Consultation Program is a key effort of Engineering Extension.South Dakota State University promotes access to and opportunities for all to receive the benefit of and participate in education, research, and service and is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to this land-grant mission of access.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Serve as a resource to business and industry within South Dakota by effectively implementing the requirements of the Federal OSHA Consultation Program grant, which has been awarded to SDSU since 1983.Serve as a resource to business and industry within South Dakota and evaluate the safety of the private sector workplaces.Assist South Dakota employers in reducing costs from occupational injuries and/or illness which benefits companies relative to potential economic development opportunities as part of Engineering Extension’s outreach service efforts to industry, the mission of the College of Engineering, and South Dakota State University.Assess general industry and construction workplaces for safety hazards.Provide professional evaluation of identified hazards; explain hazards and their implications.Assist in the correction of hazards to ensure accurate and beneficial safety surveys are conducted.Serve as an off-site technical resource to businesses, faculty, and students in order to provide information on workplace safety.Develop education curriculum, present at educational seminars, and provide professional and academic information on safety.SALARY RANGE:The base salary for this position is $48,949. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 10 hours of annual leave each month, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines. Employees also have access to internal and state-sponsored training as well as reduced tuition for state-supported courses at all State of South Dakota academic institutions.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Management, Health, Safety, Construction Management, Operations Management Technology, or technical field completed by start date.Must be authorized to work in the U.S.Valid Driver’s License.Must be proficient with the use of Microsoft Office software.Willingness to travel.Demonstrate effective communication, interpersonal relations, and motivational skills with staff, faculty, students, construction project managers, industrial plant managers, company officers, production/maintenance workers, and construction personnel.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:A minimum of one year of familiarity or experience with OSHA General Industry and/or Construction Standards, OSHA Consultation Programs/Policies/Procedures.Experience in identifying and evaluating safety hazards in the workplace.Experience in abating identified safety hazards according to OSHA standards.Experience as a presenter at safety seminars and/or conferences.APPLICATION PROCESS:This system will guide you through the electronic application form.
