Safety Coordinator

Position Reports to: General Manager
Employment Classification: regular full-time; non-exempt

Location: Aberdeen, SD

Position Summary: Under general supervision, the Safety Coordinator is responsible for monitoring One Call tickets from South Dakota and North Dakota One Call systems, monitoring AMI, reporting of the state sampling, assisting with the Safety Program, and chairing the Safety Committee. The Safety Coordinator is responsible for ensuring workplace safety and compliance with occupational health regulations. As part of the Safety Committee, this role involves developing, implementing, and monitoring safety policies and procedures to create a safe working environment for all employees. The Safety Coordinator will work closely with management and employees to promote a strong safety culture and reduce workplace hazards.

Responsibilities & Duties:

Operations and Technical Support

· Responsible for receiving One Call tickets from South Dakota and North Dakota One Call systems and determining if we need to dispatch personnel to mark the location of WEB pipes or other structures.

· Requires attending informational meetings requested by the One Call system on behalf of WEB.

· Ability to monitor, maintain and organize the Automatic Meter Reading program.

· Facilitate state sampling, lead and copper testing, and reporting processes.

· Assist in the organization and maintenance of an entire GIS-based work ticket system.

· Assist with organizing, recording, and maintaining a system-wide pressure recording program to help calibrate a hydraulic model.

· Back up to Member Services Director on creating estimates for new hookups and special construction projects; assists in obtaining necessary Easements/Right of Way permits as needed.

Safety and Compliance

· Develop, implement, and enforce safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations as part of the Safety Committee.

· Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.

· Assist with investigating workplace accidents, near misses, and incidents, and prepare detailed reports with recommendations for prevention as needed.

· Conduct safety training programs for employees on topics such as hazard recognition, emergency response, PPE usage, and safe work practices.

· Maintain records of safety incidents, training sessions, and compliance documentation, sending to appropriate certification boards annually.

· Collaborate with the Safety Committee and management to establish safety goals and ensure continuous improvement in workplace safety standards.

· Ensure that all employees and contractors adhere to safety protocols and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

· Serve as a liaison between the company and regulatory agencies, ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other relevant standards.

· Develop and lead emergency preparedness and response plans, including fire drills.

· Stay updated on industry best practices, new safety regulations, and emerging risks to proactively enhance workplace safety.

Communication and Customer Support

· Assist with creating outage voice shots.

· Update website with outages and any other changes needed per management.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with the public and colleagues.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations and workplace safety standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of land and Easement/Right of Way acquisition processes.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 70 lbs. routinely, and to squat, bend, and stand for extended periods.
  • Availability for occasional travel, including overnight stays.

Qualifications:

· Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or related field preferred.

· Experience: Class I or higher Water Distribution Operators certification preferred or the ability to obtain Class I or higher in a reasonable amount of time. Three to five years in a similar position preferred.

· Certification: Certification in safety-related programs (e.g., OSHA 30-hour, CSP, CHST) is a plus.

Miscellaneous:

  • Normal work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm.
  • This position may require working in both office and field environments.
  • Occasional travel to different job sites may be required.
