Job Overview: Enthusiastically represents SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment by displaying a positive attitude, maintaining a high level of energy and commitment to quality throughout all aspects of the job. This position is intended to provide practical, medical and surgical veterinary experience in the zoological field under the supervision of staff veterinarians. This is a one-year, limited duration position, with approximate dates of July 5, 2023 to July 1, 2024. The intern is expected to enthusiastically represent SeaWorld by displaying a positive attitude, high level of energy, and commitment to quality throughout all aspects of the job. If you were unable to attach a resume to your application, please send a copy to swc.employment@seaworld.com, attention: SWC Veterinary Intern Job Duties and Responsibilities: Participate in all aspects of veterinary care at the park, including, but not limited to, annual exams, preventative medicine, surgeries, and emergency care for collection and rescued animals. Assist veterinary staff in physical examinations and sample collection, routine/quarantine/emergency medical treatment, disease diagnosis, radiology, anesthesia, surgery, gross necropsy, and clinical pathology of aquatic and zoo animals as well as professional communication within a zoological setting. Participate in the rescue, rehabilitation, and release program for stranded marine mammals, sea birds, and sea turtles. Pursue one or more clinical or research interests and prepare the results for presentation to veterinary staff and colleagues at an appropriate professional meeting as well as for publication in the peer-reviewed literature. Communicate professionally and effectively with Ambassadors, Vendors and our Guests Perform other duties as assigned. Occasionally assist other locations and areas in the park as needed. Qualifications: At least 18 years of age. 1-year clinical veterinary internship or commensurate practical experience in small or large animal medicine and surgery is preferred. Possess, or be able to obtain, a State of California veterinary license and USDA accreditation for health certificates. Must possess a current U.S. driver’s license Must be legally authorized to work in the United States Education: A Veterinary Degree (DVM, VMD, or equivalent) from a veterinary school accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Competencies: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to prepare medical records accurately and effectively. Ability to provide high quality medical care to patients Ability to work in a collaborative manner with multi-disciplinary team members Preference will be given to those with aquatic animal, wildlife, and/or research experience Responsibility for Others: Maintain a safe work environment and adhere to safety requirements. Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift, push, pull and/or carry up to 50 lbs. Regular use of hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Position engages in extensive walking and standing throughout entire work shift and climb/ascend heights, if needed. Stand for prolonged periods of time. Perform the following physical activities: kneeling, squatting, bend floor-to waist/waist-to-overhead, reach overhead, simple grasp and fine hand manipulation tasks (use of tools/keyboard/writing) Position may be exposed to fumes, dust, odors and cold/heat temperature extremes Perform cleaning duties; including use of cleaning chemicals Must be flexible in work locations as placement will depend on business needs and career development opportunities. Availability: 40 hours per week, full-time, 5 days of unrestricted availability, to include weekends and holidays Work Conditions: Work indoors and in outside weather conditions (i.e., direct sunlight, wet and/or humid) Able to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Able to work in an environment with moderate noise levels. Must be able to manage time wisely and set priorities effectively. Able to positively interact with guests and co-workers of all ages, different ethic/cultural backgrounds and/or language, and individuals with special needs.
