Job Title: Traditional Food Security Intern   Location: Hydaburg/Prince of Wales Island, Alaska   Job Summary: Join Tlingit & Haida as the Traditional Food Security Intern and advocate for local tribal resources and food security this summer. As the Traditional Food Security Intern, you will gain knowledge in the local wild renewable resources Indigenous peoples in Southeast Alaska depend on, how its fits into our culture, and how tribes are taking active roles in co-stewardship activities. You will create partnerships with tribes to build our capacity for the future to assume the management of our local food resources, maximizing their utilization, while maintaining balance in the ecosystem. You will learn to harvest fish and wildlife through culturally appropriate methods, demonstrating the values of reciprocity and sharing. You will also gain in-depth knowledge of state and federal management programs and understanding of harvest regulations.   Through this internship, you will be a culture camp instructor that perpetuates the significance of tribal food security and practicing our traditional ways of life. We anticipate four summer camps this upcoming year, usually lasting a week per camp.   This internship will take place in Hydaburg on Prince of Wales Island, with travel to various field work and research locations around Southeast Alaska.   Duties/Responsibilities: Assist in harvesting marine mammals for fur and consumption. Assist in harvesting of halibut, salmon, shrimp, deer, etc. for the utilization in instructional camps and for distribution to the elders and youth of the tribe. Assist with database management. Travel to remote locations to locate and document resources our tribal people can harvest in abundance. Promote traditional harvesting practices and sharing our natural resources through education Learn about and participate in culture camp planning and execution. Attend meetings and workshops. Perform other duties as assigned.   Required Skills/Abilities: Interest in the field(s) of natural resources, environmental science, policy, or cultural resources. Willing and able to work outdoors in inclement weather and on challenging terrain. Able to both collaborate with a team and work independently. You will need a valid driver’s license to drive company vehicles. Ability to meet deadlines. Strong written and verbal communication skills Must be a Sealaska shareholder, descendant of a shareholder, or spouse of a shareholder. Legally authorized to work in the United States Ability to travel as needed.   Education and Experience: Must be age 18 at time of hire Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary school/program or a recent graduate (1-2 years) Legally authorized to work in the United States   Preferred: Study in the field of natural resources, environmental science, policy or cultural resources Flexibility to work outside of normal work hours and travel within Southeast communities, as needed. At least a 2.5 GPA Strong critical thinking and research skills Self-starter with ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment   Application Process: Complete online application at Sealaska.com/careers by January 27, 2025. Bending, standing, or crouching as necessary.   Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work outdoors in inclement weather and on challenging terrain, with occasional work in the office.
