The Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing safe, family centered patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for the mother-infant breastfeeding dyad, as well as for the pumping mother, and is fully collaborative with the mother, patient, patient's family, significant others, and members of the health care team. The Lactation Consultant demonstrates specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in breastfeeding and human lactation. As an integral member of the Health Care Team, the Lactation Consultant functions within the Scope of Practice as defined by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and follows Standards of Practice as defined by their professional association, International Lactation Consultant Association, and adheres to Seattle Children's policies, procedures, and guidelines of care.Required Education and ExperienceGraduate of an accredited school of nursing, OR Bachelor’s of Science in Nutrition or Clinical Dietetics, OR a Bachelor’s Degree in occupational therapy from an accredited university. Minimum two years of clinical experience in a health care setting.Required CredentialsCurrent Washington State nursing license, OR current Washington State license to practice as an occupational therapist, OR registration through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (RD) with certification with State of Washington within 4 months of hire (DI). Certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) obtained within 12 months. Current BLS for Health Care Providers is to be maintained at all times by all lactation consultants. Can be obtained within 3 months of hire.PreferredBSN or higher nursing degree, OR a Master's Degree in Nutrition, Clinical Dietetics, or Public Health with a nutrition emphasis, OR a Masters Degree in Occupational Therapy. Experience as an IBCLC. Pediatric health care experience. Experience in Maternal-Child Health setting. Understanding of adult learning principles.Compensation Range$45.80 - $68.70 per hourSalary InformationThis compensation range was calculated based on full-time employment (2080 hours worked per calendar year).
