Opportunity Description

North Seattle College is looking to hire a Full-Time Tenure Track Faculty in Computer Science within the bachelor's degree program.

This is a nine-month, full-time faculty position with a base salary of $85,365 during the regular academic year; workload balancing and additional premiums qualify this position for an additional 20% on top of this base salary. Additional compensation is available for moonlight assignments during the regular academic year and summer quarter (either instructional or through release time projects).

Position Summary

North Seattle College is searching for an equity-minded and innovative Computer Science faculty who will provide core instruction and leadership for the exciting Bachelor of Science (BS) in Computer Science degree program, which launched fall 2022. This full-time, tenure-track faculty will join a group of passionate educators who proudly embrace our mission of Changing Lives through Education, both in and beyond the classroom. Our faculty are highly collaborative and care deeply about creating an inclusive and equitable environment to advance student success for all students.

This faculty will be responsible for teaching upper division undergraduate computer science courses to the diverse student body of North Seattle College. In addition to teaching duties, they will assume a leadership role in equity-minded curriculum and program development of the BS in Computer Science. The faculty will build and sustain relationships and community with internal partners across the College and the Seattle Colleges District, as well as with external partners to eliminate equity gaps for degree-seeking students and increase diversity in the pool of computer science graduates.

North Seattle College is among the Community and Technical Colleges (CTCs) in the state of Washington that will offer this 4-year degree following the landmark legislation in July 2021 authorizing CTCs Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degrees. The program is being developed and implemented with the utmost goal of increasing racial and gender diversity and eliminating equity gaps for individuals who pursue their education and careers in the field of Computer Science.

This position reports to the Dean of Workforce Instruction and is governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between The American Federation of Teachers (Seattle Community Colleges Local 1789) and Seattle Colleges District VI.

What You Will Be Working On

  • Teach upper division computer science courses in the Computer Science BS program using appropriate teaching strategies that promote effective learning for all students; these classes may be scheduled to meet in-person and/or online, with classes scheduled at times based on program needs, including evening classes.
  • Apply teaching philosophy and practices that embody Seattle Colleges¿ values of equity, diversity and inclusion with an emphasis on eliminating equity gaps in student success and completion especially among underserved and underrepresented populations of students.
  • Engage in continuous growth and improvement of teaching through evaluations, assessments, data, and both individual and collaborative reflection.
  • Lead and work collaboratively with faculty and staff colleagues on curriculum development to create an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity and diversity, while applying awareness and understanding of historically underserved populations.
  • Serve as a mentor or connection to the college for students to feel fully supported by and engaged in the North Seattle College community, and engage in efforts to improve student confidence, persistence, and success.
  • Take the lead on envisioning and implementing the development of the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree at North Seattle College with an emphasis on eliminating equity gaps in student success and increasing the diversity of the workforce holding degrees in Computer Science.
  • Take on a leadership role in building internal and external relationships in support of computer science-related activities, curriculum, and issues; this includes support for recruitment and convening of an Advisory Committee of industry professionals and leading other departmental, college, or district-wide projects.
  • Build and nurture strategic relationships with industry leaders, local communities, organizations, and institutions to drive collaboration, partnerships, and mutual growth.
  • Take the lead on assessing the impact of program development and implementation, and devise plans for improvement.
  • Meet all professional obligations as described in the faculty union agreement.

What You Bring As a Candidate

  • Master's degree or higher in Computer Science or a related field from an accredited institution
  • Higher Education teaching experience
  • Demonstrated foundation knowledge of diversity, equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles, with a commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment in computer science or other STEM fields. This included supporting underrepresented and marginalized identities.
  • Ability to apply anti-racist pedagogy and transformative educational perspectives, such as critical pedagogy and curriculum decolonization, with a willingness to grow in these areas to enhance equity in higher education
  • Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and assessing impact of strategies and practices in teaching and learning that work to support student success and eliminate equity gaps in student outcomes
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and actively contributing to communities of faculty, staff and/or students to serve institutional mission and goals
  • Demonstrated experience with innovation of curriculum in the field of Computer Science to be responsive to industry needs; to advance ethical, humanistic approaches; and to address issues of racial, social and economic justice
