Opportunity Description

North Seattle College is looking to hire a Full-Time Tenure Track Faculty Counselor in the Counseling Department.

Salary Range for this position is $ $85,365 annually.

This position is a full time, nine month faculty appointment and is expected to work 5 days per week. Monday through Thursday are required on campus and Friday can be remote. This policy is subject to change based upon district and campus requirements.

Under the supervision of the Vice President of Student Success North Seattle Counseling is seeking applicants for a full-time tenured counseling faculty member beginning Fall quarter 2025. Applicants with bilingual and multilingual fluence are encouraged to apply.

About The Department

North Seattle College Counseling faculty members provide curriculum and services to effectively help a diverse student population enter, persist, and success in college. To meet these goals counselors use: multiple methods (personal, career, academic and career counseling, teaching, providing outreach/workshops, consulting and developing instructional/informational media) focused on multiple populations (individuals, students, student groups, faculty and staff, campus culture) to achieve multiple intentions (affirming cultural diversity, providing crisis intervention and referral, helping students identify and develop educational and career goals, life skills and study skills).

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by AFT-Seattle and is subject to union shop provisions. The annual salary is based on a 172-day contract.

What You Will Be Working On

Principle Duties of this Position include:

Counseling Duties

  • Provide short-term, culturally competent, individual counseling to ethically and effectively help students identify counseling concerns, establish goals and in a supportive working alliance, provide personal, educational, career counseling interventions, and provide referrals for students.
  • Use culturally-responsive therapeutic modalities to help historically underrepresented student populations overcome obstacles they may experience in college (e.g. neuro-diverse learners, students of color, first-generation college students, LGBTQIA, veterans, English language learners, etc.).
  • Help students select educational programs, identify access barriers early, and collaborate with other campus offices (e.g. Registration, Financial Aid, Disability Services, Child Care etc.) to facilitate access to services.
  • Provide career counseling to help students make meaningful and realistic choices to start a career path.
  • Administer and interpret career interest inventories to help undecided students identify their skills and interests to choose a program of study.
  • Provide brief crisis counseling to students experiencing acute/ ongoing emotional concerns, refer students to appropriate agencies, and consult with campus employees about how to manage crisis situations.
  • Provide consultations for faculty and staff about student concerns that arise to create a campus that welcomes and supports diverse students.

Instructional Duties

  • Teach Human Development Course (HDC) 2-credit courses ranging from Orientation to College Success, Stress Management, Career Planning and Personal Development, to Math Learning Strategies.
  • Foster a positive, caring, equitable learning environment where differences and pluralism are valued, and all students have opportunities to be successful learners.
  • Participate in on-going curriculum development, revision, and implementation that incorporates multi-cultural perspectives and aligns with accessibility requirements.
  • Develop distance-learning methods of delivering human development curriculum.

Other Duties

  • Create and deliver outreach activities and workshops to students in skill areas such as: concentration, test-taking, managing time and stress, and choosing a program of study.
  • Collaborate with campus organizations to increase student retention.
  • Use technology to provide students with counseling information and referral programs.
  • Actively participate in college governance and other institutional initiatives such as: College Council, Communication Awareness Referral Education (CARE) Team, Curriculum Advisory Council (CAS), or Guided Pathway.
  • Contribute and support Counseling mission and goals

What You Bring As a Candidate

Minimal Qualification

  • Master¿s or Doctoral degree from an accredited institution in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Educational Psychology, Educational Counseling, Social Work or related field. Graduate coursework must include counseling theory and practice, testing and measurements, career development counseling theory, multi-cultural counseling, ethics, and supervised practicum.
  • Eligible for Washington state licensure as Mental Health Counselor, Psychologist or certification as Agency Affiliated Counselor.
  • Demonstrated success counseling and teaching (formal or informal) diverse groups representative of urban, public, higher education.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, evaluating, and adjusting counseling sessions, outreach programs/workshops, and course curriculum to increase student retention and academic completion.
  • Experience working within a comprehensive counseling-model (diverse methods, populations, intentions) with a commitment to equity ad pluralism.
