Position Summary: 

 

UIHI, a Division of Seattle Indian Health Board, has embarked on a journey to reclaim the Indigenous values of data, evaluation, and research as a way to contribute to the health and well-being of tribal people living in urban areas nationwide. The Youth Intern will explore a range of public health career opportunities, participate in Indigenous methodologies trainings, and gain knowledge that is aligned with the UIHI values of using western science to complement Indigenous knowledge systems. The Youth Intern will work under the close mentorship of a UIHI staff member. Intern projects will be based on current UIHI needs but will focus on SIHB Youth Programming including suicide and substance misuse prevention and mental health promotion.

 

 

 

 

Organizational Structure/Reporting Relationships: 

 

This position reports directly to the UIHI Program Manager and is a member of the UIHI Team.

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Duties will be dependent on the available UIHI projects and the Youth Intern’s interest and experience but may include any of the following:
  • ·  Helping with the development of UIHI communication materials to share youth events, activities, etc. with urban Native youth and partner organizations for distribution on our website and in     our locally focused newsletter.
  • ·  Support conducting SIHB Youth Programming outreach and engagement with urban Native youth and partner organizations
  • ·  Drafting letters, tables, charts, graphs, maps, data tables, presentations, and other visual aids, as necessary.
  • ·  Assisting in the editing and formatting of project reports and related materials.
  • ·  Participating in proposal development tasks.
  • ·  Using professional organizational skills to document activities and store digital files in a nonprofit setting.
  • ·  Performing quality checking on data for completeness and accuracy; and
  • ·  Performing other office tasks associated with projects, such as preparing materials, filing, copying, bibliography entries and editing, data entry, taking notes, and other duties as needed     
  •    Actively participate in internal quality improvement teams and work with members proactively to drive quality improvement initiatives in accordance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal and state laws and regulations, and accreditation standards, when assigned. 
  • ·  Other job-related duties as assigned

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Use software programs proficiently including Windows, Word, and Excel.
  • Learn to use new software such as:  Adobe Creative Suite, PowerPoint, Endnote, and SharePoint.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Multi-task and take direction from multiple people.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, superiors, public officials, and representative of other agencies and organizations, and with the public; and
  • Prioritize tasks, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
  • ·   Must be member of SIHB Kiis Youth Council
  • ·   Familiarity (personal or professional) with health and social issues facing American Indians and Alaska Natives.

 

 

Requirement

 

  • Must be age 16 or older by position start date.

 

 

Work Environment: 

 

Office hours are 8-5, Monday through Friday with occasional extra hours for events or to meet deadlines. This position is not eligible for remote work.
