What this role is all about:


We are looking for an Assistant Controller in La Crosse, WI.

The Assistant Controller plays a critical role in supporting the financial health of both Select Custom Solutions and Mill Haven Foods. Reporting to the Senior Controller, this position is responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting operations across our manufacturing facilities. The Assistant Controller is responsible for preparing timely and accurate financial statements, assisting with month-end and year-end close processes, and ensuring compliance with internal controls, company policies, and relevant regulations.


This role works cross-functionally with teams in Operations, Sales, Supply Chain, and IT to deliver meaningful financial insights that support data-driven decision-making. A strong emphasis is placed on cost accounting, budgeting, variance analysis, and inventory management—key components within our dynamic manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and able to thrive in a fast-paced setting while supporting the strategic goals of both SCS and MHF.


Job Duties
:

  • Supervise, coach, and mentor accounting staff to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and professional development. Promote a collaborative and high-performing team culture.
  • Assist in the preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Oversee and manage all aspects of the general ledger, ensuring accurate and timely month-end and year-end closing processes, including accruals, adjustments, and consolidations.
  • Lead the reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts and proactively investigate and resolve any discrepancies or variances.
  • Prepare, review, and post journal entries across all general ledger accounts to ensure completeness and accuracy of financial data.
  • Managing and executing treasury function in terms of daily cash flow, projections, financing, and debt obligations
  • Partner with leadership to support the development of annual budgets and rolling forecasts. Analyze variances and provide meaningful commentary to support financial performance reviews.
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of internal controls and company policies
  • Assist with internal and external audits, providing documentation and support as required
  • Lead initiatives to track and report on accounting and finance department KPIs. Recommend and implement solutions to improve data quality and reporting timeliness.
  • Conduct process improvement tracking and reporting
  • Provide backup support to the Controller and act as a liaison during their absence
  • Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for employee relations including work direction of employees, hiring, training, performance reviews, administering policies and procedures, disciplinary action, and compensation recommendations.
  • Direct implementation of departmental objectives, goals and policies.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Ensure that policies and procedures are being followed.
  • Understand adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Safety Protocol:
  • Stop any observed unsafe acts and obey facility safety rules and procedures.
  • Correct or report any observed safety hazards.
  • Support safety policies and programs.

Qualifications:


Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • Equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.


Experience Required:

  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive professional accounting or related business experience required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of related experience within food processing or manufacturing highly preferred.
  • Experience managing and developing staff required.
  • Experience with ERP and Business Intelligence systems, required
  • Microsoft Business Central ERP experience highly preferred.
  • Proven proficiency in all aspects of accounting functions
  • Strong analytical skills for financial analysis and reporting required.
  • Knowledge of GAAP, internal audits, and cost accounting principles, practices and techniques preferred.


Certification/Licensure Required:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) preferred.
