POSTED ON 12/31/2024
AVAILABLE BEFORE 2/18/2025

WHO We Are:

Self-Help started in 1980 with a focus on economic inequality especially in communities that have faced systemic barriers in building wealth. At the core of what Self-Help does is a drive to create and protect ownership and economic opportunity. In other words, we’re committed to economic justice! Economic Justice means that all communities have the basic infrastructure they need to thrive, from high quality schools to grocery stores selling fresh foods resources that support opportunity at a neighborhood level regardless of demographics, income, or wealth. Since our founding, we’ve constantly sought to find new ways to pursue greater economic justice: from providing fair and affordable loans, to working with partners to demand that lawmakers change unjust policies.

We are seeking a Small Business Loan Relationship Specialist to join our team!

The Small Business Loan Relationship Specialist is a critical member of the Commercial Lending Asset Quality team managing a portfolio of small business loans. The Small Business Loan Relationship Specialist is a primary point of contact for borrowers, supporting inquiries, monitoring, and modifications.

This individual must understand the value of building relationships and customer service as the Specialist will have frequent direct contact with both internal and external customers. To effectively support borrowers, the Specialist must understand complex loan documents, navigate loan monitoring systems, and have strong written communication and analysis skills. Commitment to excellent customer service, the ability to prioritize, and a team-focused approach are critical to succeeding in this role.

WHAT You'll DO:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with borrowers within the assigned loan portfolio. Actively participate in servicing and monitoring, providing excellent customer service.
  • Lead coordination with internal partners, such as Servicing, Special Assets, Legal, and Commercial Lending.
  • Perform site visits and provide technical assistance as needed.
  • Navigate complex loan documents, ensuring loan covenants are tracked and completed.
  • Coordinate the handoff from Commercial Lending with the goal of providing a seamless borrower transition. Support the handoff back to Commercial Lending if borrower requests a new loan or additional funding.
  • Review and analyze annual borrower financial statements.
  • For loan modification requests, lead collection of background, financial statements, and other documentation. Develop the modification request, including writing the memo, completing financial analysis, and coordinating with the assigned underwriter.
  • For troubled loans, support the handoff to Special Assets.
  • Organize and track multiple borrower requests and loan-level activities across a portfolio of approximately 125 loans simultaneously.
  • Provide excellent service to members as well as internal and external partners in a professional, highly responsive, and accurate manner.
  • Be a critical member of the Asset Quality relationship team that supports and builds an efficient and thorough relationship management program.
  • Act as a change agent to drive Self-Help’s economic inclusion initiatives by integrating supplier diversity and the use of businesses owned by women and people of color in third party contracting and vendor management for relevant products and services.
  • Handle other projects and duties as may be deemed necessary.

WHAT You’ll NEED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2 years of experience in lending, finance, or community economic development – or a combination of education and related experience.
  • Strong commitment to our mission – creating economic opportunity for traditionally underserved communities.
  • Preference for working in organizations that place priority on teamwork and collaboration.
  • Excellent understanding of balance sheet and income statement analysis.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain relationships with borrowers and colleagues.
  • Ability and willingness to take initiative and lead projects through to completion.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines and effectively prioritize.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Mastery of spreadsheet programs, including Excel, and strong quantitative skills.
  • Spanish language skills preferred.
  • Sensitivity to issues of low-wealth borrowers and a desire to work in a racially and socially diverse organization are essential. Teamwork and an interest in the development of co-workers are important Self-Help values.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime, when needed.
