Semo Milling, LLC has an exciting opportunity for a Grain Originator at our dry corn mill in Scott City, MO. Pay is dependent upon education and experience.
Grain Originator
I. Position Purpose
Reporting to the Director of Grain Procurement, this position is responsible for originating grain from area farmers for delivery into our processing facility and grain elevators.
II. Position Responsibilities and Duties
Performing duties to ensure the following responsibilities are managed ethically, accurately, and timely :
Origination
- Procure grain from area farmers and commercial suppliers in a manner that provides quality customer service with a focus on profitability and long-term relationships.
- Develop a working knowledge of local grain markets, contracts, hedging and spread position, logistics, etc.
- Provide logistical support to farm purchases with on-farm pick-up of grain (FOB Farm Truck Freight)
- Work directly with our logistics team and outside freight vendors to ensure a steady supply of grain into our locations.
- Maintain beneficial customer contact via phone, visits, meetings, etc. and update necessary customer profile information as needed.
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of grain contracts / amendments, grain settlements / checks, etc.
- Work with operational staff to provide steady deliveries to meet milling production requirements.
- Monitor our bid-sheet daily and update as needed to preserve our desired margin while sustaining our share of the local marketplace.
- Assist with the month-end and budgeting processes.
- Communicate any grain origination issues immediately to the Director of Grain Procurement.

III. Essential Skills
This position actively engages in phone and face-to-face communication with the farm community and is engaged in cross-functional management teams to develop and support policies and procedures in accordance with the company Vision, Values and Strategic Objectives. In addition, good oral and written communication skills, computer literacy, strong leadership skills, organizational skills and the ability to effectively work with and direct a team environment are critical. This position requires computer literacy, exceptional leadership and organizational skills.
Education Level : BS in Agribusiness or Crop Sciences or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Related Experience : 5 years Agricultural purchasing / sales experience
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
Broad and deep knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures to handle complex tasks and give experienced guidance to others
IV. Physical and Mental Requirements
This position requires physical and mental alertness, attentiveness and stamina for the length of an entire 8-12 hour work shift each day. Occasional lifting of 25-100 pounds, frequent changing from a seated to standing position and occasional to frequent stair climbing are all physical demands of this position. Periodic travel will be a requirement of this position.
