What are the responsibilities and job description for the Front-End Clerk (Full-Time) position at SENDIK'S FINE FOODS, INC.?
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To perform customer checkout transactions. To provide customer assistance in bagging groceries, carry out service and collection of carts. To contribute toward ensuring a positive shopping environment for customers and a positive working environment for employees.
NATURE AND SCOPE: Emphasis in this position is on following front-end checkout procedures in all transactions, ensuring customer service for bagging of groceries in the proper manner, placing of groceries in the automobile in proper manner and collection of carts from parking lot in a safe manner, maintaining positive customer relations and expedient processing of all orders. This position requires register/scanner operation, reading, lifting, and standing. Also requires ongoing heavy lifting and pushing, walking, exposure to outside conditions and wet surfaces. It also requires ongoing social skills, verbal interaction, judgment/decision making, and the ability to work as a team, attention to detail, listening skills and initiative. Position functions and work hours may vary according to business needs. Daily assignments and work direction is provided by the Front-End Manager or person in charge.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS
Process customers’ orders in an accurate, efficient and prompt manner
- First question after greeting the customer should be “Did you find everything you were looking for?”
- Ask for coupons and check for items on the bottom of the cart before beginning each customer’s order
- Scan each item so it is properly identified by the register system
- Obtain prices for items not identified by the register system, print out receipt, fill in product description and turn in at end of shift
- Have a working knowledge of the most frequent PLU codes
- Use care in the handling of product
- Utilize proper etiquette for paging over the paging system
- Use phones at even registers to call departments for price checks – do not leave your register if possible
Ensure that carts are available for customers
- Collect carts in a safe manner and transport to the cart area
- Ensure a six to seven cart maximum
- Remove debris from all carts
- Maintain all carts and perform minor repairs
- Take damaged carts to the back room
Ensure positive customer relations and satisfaction
- Greet and thank all customers and provide prompt and courteous service
- Direct customer problems to the Front-End Manager or other office personnel as appropriate
- Answer or refer questions and respond to requests as needed (if able, should take customer to the product)
- Make determination and respond to customer assistance needs promptly
Ensure proper handling of all forms of tender and coupons
- Properly count and enter cash into the register system
- Verify information on checks and if acceptable, enter and properly utilize check verification system, properly tender checks into the register system
- Enter proper tender per transaction (debits, charges, gift certificates, etc.)
- Maintain a neat and organized till
- Count money back to the customer, handing coin first then bills
- Count till at the end of the shift for accountability
Bag groceries for customers
- Make sure groceries are bagged properly for each customer. Size up each customer and their order and bag appropriately
- Ask all customers if they would like a carry out
- Check the bottom of the cart to see if everything has been paid for
- Check to make sure the customer has all their groceries when they leave, and nothing is left on the counter
- Wrap flowers carefully
Follow Front-End security procedures
- Keep all tenders locked in a secure location
- Notify appropriate personnel in cases of theft or shoplifting
- Lock your till under cash drawer when going on break or lunch
Perform other miscellaneous duties
- Clean the Front-End and other areas as needed
- Fill bags at the end of the registers
- Return shop backs
- Do price checks
- Clean the employee lounge
- Occasionally help out in other departments
- Gather shopping baskets and carts
- Clean pull out bagging shelves
Follow all store and department policies and procedures
