Summary
The Director of Staff Development (DSD)/MDS Coordinator is a licensed nurse responsible for orientation, in-service education and a Certification Training Program for the nurse assistants as required by Title 22 regulations. They will encourage the personal well-being and professional growth of all employees while ensuring current training and in-service education for the nursing team. They assist in providing a clean, safe, dignified, happy and healthy environment for residents by performing the duties as described below.
Essential Functions
- Develop and maintain yearly in-service calendars for Certified Nurse Assistants.
- Keep accurate records including lesson plans, course objectives, handouts, and evaluation methodology.
- Maintain attendance records.
- Provide necessary in-services to meet Skilled Nursing Facility requirements according to State and Federal Regulations.
- Plan and deliver all staff in-services addressing mandatory topics annually using facility consultants where appropriate (see CCR Title 22, Chapter 3, #72517)
- Provide 16 hours of mandatory training before any direct patient contact.
- Schedule and deliver at least 48 hours of Certified Nurse Assistant in-service training annually through classes which are made available at times accessible to all shifts.
- Provide at least 5 hours of-in-service training each year on dementia-specific related topics.
- Provide a minimum of 4 hours in-service training each two-year renewal period of preventing, recognizing and reporting instances of resident abuse, including instruction on prevent, recognizing and reporting residents’; rights violations.
- Evaluate in-service training to develop programs that enhance Certified Nurse Assistants’ patient care skills.
- Make regular checks for competency of Certified Nurse Assistants’ skills performance, positive regard for patients, and developmental needs of direct care staff, and provide mini in-service immediately if necessary.
- Retain, for four (4) years, attendance records for all Certified Nurse Assistants present at in-service classes. Make available records of all classes attended when requested by a Certified Nurse Assistant for certificate renewal. This includes, but is not limited to, in-service lesson plans, quizzes and in-service sign-in sheets.
- Provide resources for staff in services in clinical skills development.
- Develop training interventions and policies and procedures to resolve problems related to infection control, safety, and care planning.
- Renew CNA Orientation, CNA In-Service and CNA Training Program every two years as necessary.
- Responsible for teaching Nurse Assistant Training Program and following all CDPH Regulations.
General Duties
- Function as a Licensed Vocational Nurse or Registered Nurse.
- Demonstrate behavior which actively promotes a harmonious working relationship in the Skilled Nursing Facility and other hospital departments.
- Deal effectively with Medical Staff, employees and the public.
- Follow all general departmental safety, security, and health policies and procedures. Utilize all safe work practices recommended for department.
- Complete annual employment health requirements in a timely manner.
- Must keep all required licenses and certifications current.
- Other related duties that may become necessary or as directed by DON/CNO/CEO.
- Provides nursing care to patients in the Emergency Department, Acute Care and Skilled Nursing as needed during emergencies and/or high patient census or as directed by the CNO.
MDS Coordinator Duties
- Responsible for conducting annual and quarterly MDS/Care Plan in accordance with Title 22 and OBRA regulations.
- Completion of the appropriate Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) /MDS Form
- When applicable, completion of Resident Assessment Protocols (RAP) and summaries
- Development or revision of the Care Plan
- Transmission to the State in accordance to mandated time frame.
- Utilize an effective method for disseminating care plan conference information to staff involved with resident care.
Professional Requirements
- Graduate of accredited school of nursing, with license to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in the state of California.
Qualifications
- Minimum three (3) years clinical experience, one (1) year clinical experience in care of the elderly.
- Must be certified by the state of California as a Director of Staff Development or apply for State certification which requires one year of experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs in the field of nursing.
- Minimum one year experience in quality improvement programs, adult learner methodology preferred.
- Training and experience in Adult Education Teaching Methodology is desirable.
- Must maintain current BLS certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Possess computer skills in word processing, Windows, EHR, and data base programs.
- Possess communication skills by using discretion and diplomacy to create effective working relationships with physicians, administration, department managers, co-workers, and the public.
- Possess inter-relationship skills to effectively interact with physicians, administration, department managers, and co-workers to assess the quality of patient care and to minimize financial risks and liabilities.
