Senior Firewall Engineer

The Senior Firewall Network Engineer is responsible for implementing and overseeing firewall policies based on input from the Information Security Team. This role acts as a liaison between Information Security and Networking teams, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.

Required Education, Qualifications, and Experience:

• 6 years of experience with Palo Alto Networks firewalls (healthcare industry experience preferred).
• PCNSE certification preferred.
• Strong technical knowledge of networking systems, protocols, firewalls, load balancers, and VPN technologies.
• Experience with network monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
• Cisco CCNA certification or equivalent knowledge preferred.
• 2 years of team leadership experience preferred.
• Proficiency in recording and interpreting TCP/IP packet captures.
• Relevant Microsoft certifications.
• Skills in automation languages (Python, Java, Perl, etc.) are a plus.

Nice to Have:

• SDWAN experience.
• Prisma experience.

Key Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with the Project Management Office and application system owners to guide system designers on firewall requirements.
• Advise business partners on B2B VPN requirements and document VPN configurations and communication flows.
• Maintain system communication design documents for all systems traversing firewalls.
• Assist other teams in troubleshooting firewall issues by analyzing logs and interpreting TCP/IP packet captures.
• Ensure firewall appliances are up to date with OS versions, antivirus signatures, threat databases, and associated licenses.
• Stay informed about emerging firewall technologies, evaluate new features, and provide recommendations to IT management.
• Perform firewall hardware break/fix replacements and upgrades as needed.
• Monitor Service Desk incidents and request tickets, taking ownership or delegating as necessary.
• Participate as an active member of the Technical Review Board and Change Advisory Board for system change management.
• Initiate effective communication with IT teams for planning, decision-making, and management needs.
• Maintain clear communication with health system departments, users, and user groups.
• Conduct research on firewall network products, services, and standards for procurement and development efforts.
• Establish connectivity and uptime service level agreements.
• Support and ensure compliance with Administrative Procedures and directives.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager of Information Systems.

Remote/Onsite Schedule:

• Hybrid schedule for the first 3 months (on-site 3-4 days per week for onboarding and training).
• After 3 months, hybrid or remote options will be discussed with the manager.
• On-call schedule: once every 12 weeks.
