Position Description

The Greenhouse R&D Associate participates in all activities for the implementation of specific R&D trials pertaining to a defined group of crops. Trials can range from cultivar selection, recipe generation and optimization to pre-commercial testing before crops are put into production. Position will ensure climate, irrigation, fertilization and harvest targets are met. May assist the implementation of a key site wide program such as an IPM or ESH program. Assist R&D Technicians and other Associates in helping to execute protocols, including actions to maintain plant health, collecting phenotypic and environmental data.  

Responsibilities

• Actively participate in data collection activities including summarizations of key variables and timely reporting
• Monitor key plant and environmental variables to ensure success of trials.
• Ensure activities are accomplished on time including pruning, pollinations, fertilizations and pest control activities.
• Assist with all growing activities as appropriate including seeding, transplanting, irrigating, pruning, pest control, pollinating and harvesting.
• Ensure proper hygiene and safety protocols are always followed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills, Abilities and Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience growing vegetable crops in a greenhouse environment.
• Knowledge of growing vegetable crops in a hydroponic growing system.
• Ability to accurately record data and work with database type programs.
• Ability to work in an environment that can be hot and humid for extended periods of time.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken.
• Must be detailed oriented.
• Ability to work weekends and holidays as needed.

Preferred Skills, Abilities and Qualifications

• Knowledge of growing strawberries or other berries in a greenhouse environment.
• Preferred knowledge of greenhouse pests and their control.
• Have experience working in an R&D environment.
• Already has or can obtain a pesticide applicators license.

Educational Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture or a related discipline, or 4 years of greenhouse experience.
