JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Teacher I (Preschool or Early HS) Reports To: Designated Mentor or Supervising Teacher

1. General Character of Duties and Supervisory Control:
The Teacher will deliver a well planned, developmentally appropriate curriculum for assigned children. Team work and positive attitudes toward others, especially parents is essential, complying with all child care / Head Start regulations. Child safety, to include count / location of children, is essential.
2. Example of Specific Duties:
Assesses children's developmental level and plans a program to meet their individual needs, organizes the classroom to provide the best environment for the curriculum; writes and implements lesson and child individualization plans using an internet-based system; involves parents in the education of their child and encourages them to become involved in all aspects of the program; supervises Teacher Assistant, Volunteers, and other assigned workers and provides training and home visits for parents. Completes data management forms and secures in-kind donations. Both completes and assigns tasks related to cleaning and grounds maintenance related to playground safety/security.
3. Minimum Qualifications
The Preschool Teacher should have demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities as follows: knowledgeable about child growth development and the needs of children and have the ability to communicate with children and adults. A degree in early childhood (or equivalent coursework) is required. Must have an associate or baccalaureate degree in early childhood from an appropriately accredited institution and at least one year’s experience in a center or a Tennessee Pre-K endorsement. The Early Head Start teacher may qualify as a Child Development Associate (or similar state issued credential) with an infant/toddler endorsement and may have such a waiver if in a training program with written specific approvals. Must be fluent in the language used by the majority of families served in the classroom.
4. Desired Qualifications:
Baccalaureate degree in Early Childhood courses from a regionally accredited institution, along with extensive experience working with young children in a group setting. Experience managing a child care center, along with a high level of computer skill, is also desired. CDL holder / Spanish or dual language learner training a plus.
5. Other Significant Facts:
A pre-employment drug screen and clear criminal background check is required by the Agency. Ability to secure a commercial drivers license may be required in some centers, and personal transportation, including adequate auto liability coverage and proof of a satisfactory driving record is required. Occasional overnight travel is required for training events, and on-going training is required. The Preschool position is generally scheduled for 200 days per year, which includes holidays and earned leave time, and EHS teachers work year-round. State approved or provided criminal background checks and agency provided physicals are required. Tobacco free workplace with no tobacco use on break periods in Early Head Start centers; uniforms are required for EHS who use or are exposed to tobacco in their homes / vehicles.
6. Select staff may be designated as the School Readiness Coach and/or special education specialist and will participate in local and agency advisory meetings and support training and use of school readiness activities and serve as teaching staff resources.
7. Physical Requirements:
Must have a post job offer physical prior to working with children and a drug test and evidence of a negative T.B. screening. Physical demands of this position include lifting (over 50 pounds in emergency situations), stooping, sitting in child size furniture, ability to hear conversations, detect odors, and vision adequate to supervise young children is needed.
