What are the responsibilities and job description for the Domestic Violence Child Welfare Advocate (DVCWA) for the CPI Project position at Serene Harbor, Inc.?
Position Overview
The Domestic Violence Child Welfare advocate is co-located in the child welfare offices and works from an
empowerment-based philosophy; therefore, they are skilled at identifying strengths. The advocate provides consultation to
child protection staff, referral services to survivors, and attends monthly meetings between all partnering stakeholders to
develop strategies to resolve any barriers or issues. Facilitates training to child welfare staff and community partners.
Provides one-on-one empowerment-based domestic violence education classes. Facilitates weekly support groups for
survivors of domestic violence to incorporate self-care, safety planning, dynamics and tactics of abuse, healthy vs.
unhealthy relationships and the effects on children.
Responsibilities Include:
- Serves as the expert on child welfare-involved domestic violence cases and helps build the capacity of child welfare
professionals to partner with survivors and hold batterers accountable
- Provide crisis de-escalation, safety planning, counseling, social service referrals, domestic violence empowerment
based classes, and advocacy as well as, registration services to survivors of domestic violence at Department of
Children and Families, a Community Based Care Provider, other partner sites and at Serene Harbor main campus
- Provide consultation to Department of Children and Families staff and partner agency staff on domestic violence
cases as well as host training's centered on the dynamics of domestic violence, batterer accountability and safety
planning
- Provide assistance to survivors who are involved in court proceedings: e.g., orientation to procedures, emotional
support, and attend court hearings
- Review confidential victim referrals submitted by CPI for the purpose of providing and/or coordinating case
consultation services, assists in the plan to link the participant to crisis intervention, emotional support, short term
counseling, financial assistance, shelter, or other related assistance as indicated
- Participate in all training's and quarterly conference calls facilitated by FCADV that is related to the CPI project
- Attend community service provider meetings as required.
- Reports directly to the Program Director
- Other duties as assigned by the Shelter Program Director or President & CEO
- Full time 40 hours per week to include some flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed
- Regular travel to workplace locations: Department of Children and Families, Brevard County Courthouses, law
enforcement agencies, and other locations
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (Master’s Degree preferred) in social service held with personal or work experience in domestic
violence.
- Valid Florida’s driver’s license. Safe driving record. Proof of automobile liability insurance.
- Excellent interpersonal and community-building skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Experience & knowledge of social justice issues, particularly gender violence, immigration and racial, class, and/or
sexual orientation issues
- Must be able to attend a three day Domestic Violence Core Competency Training
- Bilingual strongly preferred
