Founded in 1989 by Mark Hammond, our clinics are located in Portland and Sanford, Maine. We also provide contracted services in public schools and special purpose private schools throughout the state. Position Summary :

An Augmentative Communication Specialist is responsible for assessing, developing, and implementing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies and tools for individuals with speech and communication disorders. The specialist works closely with clients, their families, and other healthcare professionals to enhance communication abilities and improve quality of life.

Key Responsibilities :

Assessment :

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients' communication abilities and needs.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of existing communication methods and tools.
  • Identify appropriate AAC systems and devices based on individual client needs.

Development and Implementation :

  • Design personalized AAC strategies and interventions.
  • Select and customize AAC devices and software.
  • Train clients, families, and caregivers on the use of AAC systems.
  • Collaboration :

  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, educators, and medical professionals.
  • Provide consultations and recommendations to team members regarding AAC interventions.
  • Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and other planning sessions.
  • Training and Support :

  • Conduct training sessions and workshops for clients, families, caregivers, and professionals on AAC tools and techniques.
  • Offer ongoing support and troubleshooting for AAC users.
  • Develop educational materials and resources related to AAC.
  • Documentation and Reporting :

  • Maintain detailed records of assessments, interventions, and client progress.
  • Prepare reports and documentation for insurance purposes, funding applications, and team communication.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Research and Development :

  • Stay updated on the latest research and advancements in the field of AAC.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, conferences, and workshops.
  • Contribute to the development of new AAC tools and techniques.
  • Qualifications :

  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology, Special Education, or a related field.
  • Certification in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) or relevant certification.
  • Experience with AAC assessments, tools, and interventions.
  • Strong understanding of various AAC devices, software, and applications.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.
  • Patience, empathy, and a commitment to improving clients' quality of life.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience working with diverse populations, including children and adults with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of multiple AAC systems and devices.
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering training programs.
  • Experience in conducting research or contributing to AAC-related projects.
  • Work Environment :

  • This position may require travel to various client locations, schools, and healthcare facilities.
  • The role involves both office-based work and direct client interactions in various settings.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be necessary to accommodate client needs.
  • Salary and Benefits :

  • 65,000-$75,000 / year bonuses
