Position Overview
The primary role of this position is to advance the Office of Civic Engagement’s reach by leading democratic engagement efforts, overseeing the student pantry, tracking data on community engagement across campus through GivePulse, and advising student-led groups on civic engagement projects by fostering relationships with community partner organizations. Through democratic engagement programming, the coordinator plays a crucial role in ensuring the campus meets federally mandated requirements to provide nonpartisan voter registration opportunities and voter education during election years while also overseeing programming for the federally mandated Constitutional Day recognition. Additionally, the person in this position assists with office communication to stakeholders through managing the website and other forms of communication.
This position receives supervision from the Director of Service Internships. Broad instructions are provided, and the staff member uses judgment and experience to carry out assignments. Completed assignments and finished products are reviewed by supervisors and program directors after completion.

Position Description
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
Foster Democratic Engagement:
- Coordinate and implement democratic engagement programming, including federally mandated voter registration, federally mandated Constitution Day and Citizenship Day events, Debate Watches, and programming during non-election years around civic responsibility.
- Manage national partnerships with NSLVE and the All-In Campus Democracy Challenge.
- Collaborate with Student Life, academic departments, and other campus partners for on-campus programming to facilitate interest in civic identity and the democratic process.
- Facilitate communication with local partners.
- Collaborate with other OCE staff in a logistics plan for Explore activities.
- Assist with/accompany Explore activities during FYE.
- Assist faculty interested in including community-engaged activities in their FYE ”Encounter” section.
- Plan and facilitate programming for weekly Bonner/Canale meetings.
- Design and organize a multi-college immersive experience for sophomore Bonners and Canales with regional Bonner schools, the “Sophomore Exchange”.
- Design, organize, and lead an immersive experience for freshman Bonners and Canales in a community within the region, a “First-Year Trip”.
- Collaborate with the Community Action Committee (CAC) on food ordering and budgeting.
- Utilize Second Harvest of Middle Tennessee’s Agency food ordering platform to ensure timely ordering of foodstuffs.
- Work with Student Life to advertise the pantry.
- Collaborate with Student Organizations on food/non-food drives to stock items as needed.
- Oversee Bonner/Canale interns working at the pantry.
- Ensure data on use is collected and reported.
- Develop and facilitate training of student organizations and academic courses in the use of the civic engagement-specific data tracking platform of GivePulse.
- Design the functionality needed from GivePulse to help OCE best track data for reporting purposes.
- Work with community partners to educate them about the use of GivePulse.
- Collaborate with South Cumberland Community Fund and the Director of Community Development to ensure efficient use of Give Pulse for grant applications and reporting.
Advise Student Organizations:
- Facilitate and advise service engagement for Greek organizations working with community partners, including developing and facilitating training for Greek service chairs on organizing projects, fundraisers, and ongoing relationships in the community, and tracking engagement through GivePulse.
- Facilitate and advise service engagement for students in various organizations and provide training and advice on community relationships.
- Advise the Community Engagement House on organizing and marketing events, managing house conflicts, creating yearly objectives and goals, supporting leadership, and developing and deciding on house applications.
- Collaborate with Student Life to support student organizations’ service engagement.
OCE Communication:
- Ensure that the OCE website is regularly updated with news/announcements, highlighted stories, and any program updates.
- Compile announcements from programs for weekly OCE announcements.
- Compile short news items for the bi-monthly newsletter.
- Manage the organization of OCE shared Google drives.
Judgment Required:
Judgment and discretion as to the use of established policies are required to perform the essential duties of this position.
Budgetary Responsibility:
Oversees budget for Democratic Engagement and Student Pantry.
Machines and Equipment Used:
- Word, Excel, copying, social media, Google platform, and Canva.
- Promotional material design platforms such as StickerMule and 4Imprint.

Experience:
Some experience working with student civic engagement programs and/or mentoring students is required, as is some experience with and knowledge of community partners. Program reporting and assessment experience are desirable.
