Position Overview
Primary Function:
The Director of FitWell is responsible for the establishment of an integrative and comprehensive approach to physical health and well-being by providing institutional leadership to advance strategic initiatives on exercise, health and wellness through programmatic and content development, collaborative institutional partnerships, and effective communication strategies. Reporting to the Executive Director of Wellness, the Director of FitWell provides leadership and has operational oversight for Fitwell, including services for students, faculty and staff as well as for our fee-based membership, FitComm. This position is responsible for hiring and program creation, assessment, and improvement. The Director of FitWell is also responsible for the creation of a strong sense of community in the gym by building campus relationships and creating programming designed to increase a sense of community and inclusivity.
This position works with considerable independence and self-direction. Only the general direction and scope of the work to be accomplished are discussed with the supervisor. The staff member is expected to independently carry out position duties and understand what is expected and how to do it.

Position Description
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and operational responsibility for FitWell’s services, equipment, and facilities.
- Responsible for the strategic planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of all of the Wellness Commons’ services and programming that focuses on fitness in collaboration with the Executive Director.
- Work with the Executive Director and the FitWell manager to hire and train student and non-student workers, ensuring that staff are knowledgeable of the Wellness Commons’ commitment to kind and friendly customer service and of our procedures and policies (including FERPA and CPR training).
- Work with the Wellness Commons’ leadership team and other stakeholders to develop, assess, and improve a multi-faceted campus-wide education program for students' physical, emotional, psychological, and overall well-being.
- Participates in the Wellness Commons’ prevention efforts, including hosting mocktail events after exercise classes and providing prevention materials.
- Develop, assess, and improve upon a robust group fitness program. Train FitWell employees in best practices for fitness education and exercise science.
Serve as subject matter expert on physical fitness and maintain strong working relationships with relevant campus partners. Lead fitness classes and/or provide personal training for FitWell members.
Share on-call duties with the Fitwell manager and respond to scheduling and medical emergencies as necessary.
Judgment Required:
Performance of the essential duties of this position is dependent upon independent ingenuity and developmental efforts.
Budgetary Responsibility:
Analyzes budgetary data and develops budget proposals.

- A wide range of assistive strength machines, cardio equipment, sound systems, etc.
- Experience with troubleshooting and repairing electronic and battery-operated equipment preferred

Attributes of a Successful Candidate
Education:
Bachelor’s degree required. Master's degree preferred in Exercise Science, Public Health, Recreation, Sport Management, or related field.
Experience:
Professional level experience managing indoor and outdoor fitness and recreation facilities.- Experience with personnel supervision.
- Recreation and fitness programming experience such as development, implementation, and assessment of successful fitness, wellness, and recreational programs.
- Experience working with college students and in a campus setting is preferred.
- Experience in recreation program software, especially Fusion Innosoft preferred.
Job-Related Skills:
The successful candidate should possess outstanding written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build cross-disciplinary alliances. Must be able to work effectively with community partners, and have experience developing, implementing, and evaluating community-based fitness/health promotion..- Strong organizational skills and the ability to build consensus on issues, policies, and processes.
- Excellent leadership, diplomacy, and team management skills with the ability to engage others through a participative process, while serving as a key decision-maker.
- Demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive student body, faculty, staff, and other constituents.
- Strong project and program management and evaluation skills.
- Ability to hire and train staff
Licenses/Certifications:
Certification in CPR, First Aid, and a certification to teach fitness courses (i.e., ACE, ACSM, CHES, NSCA, Yoga Alliance, or equivalent) are preferred
