Monday – Friday, 8 : 00 AM – 5 : 00 PMThe SFMTA oversees Muni, parking and traffic, bicycling, walking, and taxis, ensuring safe and reliable travel for over one million people in San Francisco.POSITION DESCRIPTION : The Strategic Communications Advisor is a principal advisor to the Streets Division Director and produces core messaging for Streets Division executives and senior management. The SFMTA seeks a curiosity-driven, organized team player to help execute strategic communications campaigns, write compelling messages for agency leadership, create meaningful content for internal audiences, and find innovative ways to communicate with and engage employees. In collaboration with Streets leadership and communications colleagues, the Strategic Communications Advisor ensures the agency’s communications integrity, ensuring confidence in messages supported by facts, transparency, and honesty.The Strategic Communications Advisor will shape the story of street safety and design evolution in San Francisco and ongoing innovation in the SFMTA’s values. This role requires creativity combined with organizational skills to manage multiple projects with tight deadlines, understand complex issues, and coach colleagues on effective communication. The successful candidate will summarize technical and transportation concepts compellingly in writing and in person.EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES : Develops a Streets Division content strategy for web, broadcast, social media, and print material rooted in the SFMTA’s values. Collaborates with other communicators to implement that strategy, delivering content to both internal and external audiences.Leads the development and execution of proactive and strategic communication initiatives in partnership with teams across the SFMTA; continually monitors, analyzes, and refines these initiatives to maximize impact.Writes internal and external communications pieces on behalf of the Streets Division Director.Collaborates on the development of internal communications to keep employees informed, inspired, and connected to the SFMTA’s mission and values.Develops multimedia communications strategies and partners with designers to create visuals and videos for external and internal use.Supports communications related to transportation crisis events and major incidents.Conceptualizes impactful, data-driven communications collateral including messages, talking points, social media posts, video scripts, and speeches.Identifies emerging topics and leads the development and execution of proactive communication plans.Advises and counsels executives and other agency leaders on effective messaging strategies for specific audiences.Uses data to evaluate, adjust, and target communications.Oversees and coordinates the work of consultants and contractors on specific deliverables.Establishes and maintains a network across the SFMTA and other city and regional agencies.Performs related duties as assigned.How to qualify

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university;

ANDFive (5) years of professional experience in communications, media, government, community affairs, or related fields including creating and implementing internal and external communications programs.Substitution :

Additional qualifying professional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis for a full four (4) year substitution.DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS : Leadership role in communications for a highly visible agency.Up-to-date knowledge of communications practices and technologies.Excellent writing skills, including experience writing for senior executives.Direct experience in crisis communications.Video production and editing skills.Ability to translate technical information into easily digestible concepts.Experience conceptualizing visual representations and infographics.Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.Experience and comfort working through conflict to productive outcomes.Conversant in transportation concepts and policies.Knowledge of San Francisco neighborhoods and politics.Passion for the SFMTA’s work and mission.What else should I know?
