Position Overview
The Community Engagement Coordinator will play an instrumental role in building and expanding Sharing Excess's connections within local communities, colleges, and universities. This position is focused on managing and growing our community engagement efforts, particularly our pop-up food distributions and volunteer events, while also supporting our marketing and communications efforts through social media and newsletters. Key Responsibilities
Pop-Up Support & Logistics:
- Assist in managing and coordinating pop-up food distribution events, including tasks like loading produce, setting up tents, and interfacing with volunteers.
- Ensure efficient setup, operation, and breakdown of pop-up events, maintaining smooth interactions with attendees and volunteers.
- Safely handle pallets of produce using forklifts or manual methods and drive our cargo van for reliable deliveries.
- Volunteer Management & Engagement:
- At distribution events, guide and manage volunteer teams including students, corporate groups, and local community members.
- Support volunteer recruitment efforts and ensure strong engagement by fostering a welcoming and impactful experience.
- Community Engagement & Outreach:
- Build and deepen relationships with local community groups, colleges, universities, and nonprofit partners.
- Act as a representative of Sharing Excess at community events, educating the public about our mission and impact.
- Marketing & Communications:
- Support our communications team by helping manage our social media platforms and creating engaging newsletters that highlight the impact of our work.
- Participate in content creation for social media and email campaigns, promoting upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, and community stories.
- Collaboration with Distribution Team:
- Help the distribution team strengthen communication with recipient organizations, ensuring that our food rescue operations are effective and impactful.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field (e.g., Social Work, Nonprofit Management, Public Health, or related fields).
- Experience:
- Previous experience in community outreach, volunteer management, or a similar role is highly preferred.
- Experience coordinating community events is highly preferred.
- Strong passion for food justice, community-building, and nonprofit work.
- Skills:
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to manage logistics for events and activities in a fast-paced, high-energy environment.
- Experience with social media management and content creation is a plus.
- Other Attributes:
- Strong interpersonal skills and a genuine interest in engaging with a diverse range of people.
- Self-motivated, organized, and able to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Access to a personal vehicle and flexibility with evenings/weekends for community events.
- Availability Saturdays 9am-5pm for in-person events in West Philadelphia.
Salary: $50,000-$55,000 annually, commensurate with experience
