As we continue to expand our tourism efforts, we are seeking a passionate and skilled Tourism Director to help us lead and grow our tourism initiatives.
The Tourism Director at SAI will play a key role in promoting our destination while ensuring sustainable tourism practices that benefit both the community and visitors. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing tourism strategies that enhance the visitor experience, drive economic growth, and align with our company’s values of environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.

Minimum Candidate Requirements

Candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in Tourism Management, Hospitality, Business Administration, or a related field or equivalent experience, or an additional 4 years relevant experience in lieu of degree.

The Tourism Director at SAI will play a key role in promoting our destination while ensuring sustainable tourism practices that benefit both the community and visitors. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing tourism strategies that enhance the visitor experience, drive economic growth, and align with our company’s values of environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.
Key Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following:
- Tourism Strategy Development: Develop and execute comprehensive tourism strategies to attract visitors to Shee Atiká's region while promoting our cultural heritage, local businesses, and environmental resources.
- Marketing & Promotion: Lead marketing efforts, with the help from our marketing department, including digital campaigns, social media strategies, public relations, and partnerships with travel writers to raise awareness and interest in our destination.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with local Shareholders, businesses, government entities, tribal leaders, and tourism boards to foster partnerships and enhance the overall tourism offering.
- Cultural & Heritage Promotion: Ensure that tourism activities highlight the rich cultural and historical traditions of Sitka and the Tlingit people and include respectful storytelling in all aspects of the visitor’s experience.
- Event Planning & Coordination: Organize and oversee tourism-related events, cultural events, and local activities that enhance the visitor experience and promote Sitka’s unique heritage.
- Visitor Services: Provide excellent customer service and ensure that visitors have access to accurate and engaging information about the region, attractions, and events.
- Sustainability & Responsible Tourism: Promote sustainable tourism practices that respect the environment and cultural heritage while minimizing the ecological footprint of tourism activities.
- Budget Management: Develop, manage, and report on the tourism budget, ensuring the effective allocation of resources to maximize return on investment.
- Data & Market Research: Analyze tourism trends, visitor feedback, and competitor destinations to improve strategies and services continuously.
- Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor a team of professionals, providing training and fostering a positive, collaborative work environment.

- Tourism industry and market trends, especially with respect to cultural and heritage tourism in Southeast Alaska.
- Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Proven ability to build relationships with key stakeholders, including local businesses, other Native organizations, government agencies, and tourism operators.
- Knowledge of sustainable tourism practices and responsible travel principles.
- Experience with digital marketing, social media strategies, and tourism-related technologies.
- Strong analytical skills to interpret data and make informed decisions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with Shee Atiká’s unique working culture and environment.
- Experience with event planning and community-based tourism.
- Knowledge of local and regional tourism markets, including eco-tourism and indigenous tourism practices.
- Proficiency in tourism management software or booking systems
- Primarily out of office-based, with travel required to local attractions, cultural sites, and tourism-related events.
- Flexible working hours, including evenings and weekends as needed for special events or peak tourism seasons.
