What are the responsibilities and job description for the Plans Examiner II - BUILDING (Code Enforcement) position at Shelby County Government?
Position Summary
Works under general supervision of a Plans Examiner III and is responsible for reviewing and approving moderately to highly complex building and development plans for code compliance with building electrical mechanical and plumbing codes and regulations.Minimum Qualifications
1. Seven (7) years of experience in building construction, building drafting, building design or related field; AND
2. High school diploma or possess a GED; OR
3. Three (3) years of experience in building construction, building drafting, building design or related field; AND
4. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, architecture or related field; OR
5. An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience.
6. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Examines plans and specifications for compliance with Memphis and Shelby County building codes.
2. Makes decisions or judgments on the interpretation of building codes.
3. Consults with technical and professional architects; engineers; and contractors on various aspects of design and construction projects.
4. Communicates complex and technical requirements relating to the permit process, building codes and zoning ordinances.
5. Provides field inspections as necessary.
6. Ensures files are maintained on floor plans and site plans for all permits issued.
7. Ensures the proposed use is allowed in the zoning district and that structures do not encroach upon required setbacks.
8. Works in a team environment with other examiners and permit technicians and keeps management informed of unusual situations during the review process.
9. Performs other related duties as required or directed.

1. Knowledge of design, drafting, plans, principles, practices and techniques of building construction.
2. Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
3. Knowledge of basic architectural and engineering building practices and principles.
4. Knowledge of building construction codes and standards, statutes, rules, regulations and ordinances.
5. Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely and effectively in verbal and written forms.
6. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with citizens, coworkers, public officials and other agencies.
7. Skilled in the use of a personal computer and associated software programs.
8. Skilled in effective customer service and public relations methods and practices.
9. Skilled in utilizing strong organizational and time management techniques.
Physical Requirements
1. Must pass a physical examination.
2. Must be able to lift and carry building plans weighting up to 50 pounds.
Special Requirements
