This is a paid intern position in the Planning division of Development Services to assist in the daily operations. This position will be filled with a current college student. This position is open for the Summer of 2025.

- Contributes to the Department of Development Services by providing administrative assistance and customer service to the residents of Shelby County.
- Contributes to the pre-construction planning and project analysis by providing customer service in researching and updating data and performing basic zoning/subdivision research for multiple projects ranging in size and scope.
- Responds to inquiries and provide assistance by telephone, email and in person, to County staff and the public regarding zoning and related planning information.
- Assists planners and staff with evaluating proposals for compliance with zoning/subdivision regulations.
- Assists planners with planning/subdivision/zoning related research.
- Maintains and updates information in Cityworks and M-Files computer programs as necessary.
- Participates in and/or supports special planning projects under the supervision of the Planning team.
- Creates and maintains spreadsheets, reports, and databases from established content; verifies and tabulates data; and runs basic reports and queries as requested.
- Provides data collection and field assessments as requested.
- Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by supervision.
REQUIRED
- Must be a current undergraduate or graduate college student. Preference for a graduate or undergraduate student studying:
- Community or Urban Planning,
- Computer Science,
- Information Technology,
- Public Administration,
- Engineering,
- Geography or a related field.
- Experience in ESRI GIS software suite
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- The successful candidate will be detail oriented; able to follow direction; a self-starter; must be courteous, polite and enjoy meeting and talking with people both in-person and on the phone.
- Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ESRI ArcGIS Desktop and Web content. Preference given for applicants with background in GIS.
