K-12 Librarian

The Shenandoah Community School District is seeking qualified candidates for a K-12 Librarian for the 2025-2026 school year. 

Position Summary: To provide all students with an enriched library containing a wide variety of materials and equipment that will invite intellectual growth, and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of the library resources.
 
Reports to:  Principal or Designee
 
Qualifications and Educational Requirements

• Current Iowa teaching license
• Appropriate endorsements
• Previous school library experience, preferred

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Knowledge of post-secondary opportunities
• Knowledge of services for students
• Technology proficient
• Exercise independent judgment and professional discretion

Duties and Responsibilities

• Operates and supervises the library to which assigned.
• Evaluates, selects, and requisitions new library materials.
• Assists teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials, and makes library materials available to supplement the instructional program.
• Informs teachers and other staff members concerning new materials the library acquires.
• Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials and instructs teachers and students on use of the system.
• Arranges for interlibrary loan of materials of interest or use to teachers.
• Works with teachers in planning those assignments likely to lead to extended use of library resources.
• Promotes appropriate conduct of students using library facilities.
• Helps students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
• Presents and discusses materials with a class studying a particular topic, on the invitation of the teacher.
• Participates in staff meetings and professional development as assigned.
• Arranges frequently changing book-related displays and exhibits likely to interest the library’s patrons.
• Prepares and administers the media center budget which includes print and non-print materials and equipment.
• Supervises library associates in the performance of their duties.
• Weeds obsolete and worn materials and equipment from the collection.
• Conducts a continuous evaluation of the materials and equipment so that purchases may be made on an increasingly selective basis.
• Keeps informed of new developments and trends in the field of multimedia instruction so that innovations and new materials may be tried in the district.
• Other duties as may be assigned.
