Job Summary:
The nutritionist is primarily responsible for communicating and educating WIC clients to improve their ability to make healthy dietary choices. The nutritionist, through a series of health screens and the use of Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (V.E.N.A.}, assesses risk codes and provides a food package that is designed to give WIC clients a healthy start in life.
Role & Responsibilities:
- Meets with client and using the V.E.N.A. method, asks the appropriate questions to enlist an effective assessment, probes into feeding methods to make sure the methods are age appropriate.
- Based on the client assessment, the nutritionist will assign or be aware of system-assigned risk codes associated with the client.
- Using the Crossroads software system, the nutritionist will input data in a variety of screens that will touch many assessment factors. i.e. - anthropometrics, Eco-Social Assessment, Dietary & Health, Certification Summary.
- Certifies the client into the program
- Issue benefits on the E-WIC card.
- Discuss with the client and document Care Plan with family and individual goals.
- Nutritionist will refer when necessary, to medical providers or other psycho / social resources.
- Nutritionist will provide Nutrition Education based on assessment and explain the benefit package.
- Orders and documents WIC-53 prescription for Special Formulas. Places order with the Warehouse.
- Schedules next appointment for client.
- Maintains adequate knowledge of all the jobs in the WIC program. May be asked to do the Anthropometric measurements and hemoglobin finger stick when necessary.
- Must keep up with knowledge of the Nutrition field by participating in at least 12 hours of training approved by the state WIC office.
- Maintains proper procedures with regard to protecting confidential information, both verbally and on the computer screen.
- Maintains a positive working relationship with management, providers, peers and clients.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Education Requirements (add Licensure on pertinent jobs):
- Must possess a B.A. or B.S. Degree with a concentration in Foods and Nutrition or related major.
- An Advanced Degree as a Registered Dietitian is preferred.
- Must have strong communication and computer skills.
- An amicable and empathetic demeanor.
- Thorough Knowledge of WV WIC program
- There is moderate keyboarding required.
