LIBRARY/MEDIA SPECIALIST JOB DESCRIPTION
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

195 day contract.
- District salary schedule based on education and experience.
- 10 days Sick Leave per year of employment.
- 3 days Personal Leave per year.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate major or course of study from an
accredited college or university.
- Pass all required criminal background checks at personal expense.

Ability to perform duties while following district policies as well as state
and federal regulations, guidelines, and laws.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret printed instructions, professional
journals, handbooks, bulletins, announcements, etc.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships and work cooperatively
with students, peers, and parents.
Ability to follow written and verbal directions or instructions. -
Demonstrate skill in written and oral communication, which could include effectively
presenting information and responding to questions from groups of students,
administrators, staff, and the general public.

Demonstrate adequate computer skills, including Internet research, data
entry, grade reports, etc.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Create a library media center that is conducive to learning, has a positive
atmosphere, and is inviting to all students, parents, faculty members, and
patrons.
2. Develop and implement practices and procedures for the efficient and
effective operation of the library program.
3. Maintain flexible scheduling of the media center to provide students and
staff greatest availability.
4. Organize the physical space of the library for efficiency and accessibility.
5. Serve as an information specialist and provide additional resources for
faculty and students.
6. Participate as needed in the development of policies relating to the
library media center and/or any resources available through the library.
7. Support school instructional plans and goals to coordinate and integrate
library services across the curriculum.
8. Manage the selection of materials that will meet the needs of all users and
also maintain the materials’ processing and organization.
9. Maintain acquisitions, maintenance, and inventory of resources and media
for the library media center.
10. Apply knowledge of the budgeting process and record keeping for
operating a cost effective library media program.
11. Network with other school and public libraries to assist students and
instructional staff with resources outside the school.
12. Announce and promote new materials, services or library programs to
users.
13. Establish research based instructional practices and collaborate with
instructional staff.
14. Coordinate and promote the use of new technology and media.
Effectively implement the technology to model/assist students and
instructional staff.
15. Provide staff development for teachers in the use of media center
equipment and the integration of technology in teaching.
16. Serve on school committees and participate in team level meetings to
support school instructional and administrative staff.
17. Promote literacy by encouraging students and staff to read for pleasure
and motivate their reading using a variety of programs.
18. Provide book talks and recommend literature to students based on their
interests and reading levels.
19. Provide whole group instruction, small group instruction, and individual
instruction as needed in research skills and strategies in the location of
library materials/resources.
20. Attend professional development sessions to increase knowledge and to
stay abreast of new research and emerging technology.
21. Perform other duties or assume other responsibilities as assigned by
building principal or designee.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. The employee may occasionally push or lift 50 lbs. such as boxes of books,carts, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. This position required the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
