Reports To: Assistant Superintendent/Director of Special Education

Classification: Full-time, Year-round Position

Salary Range: $75,000 - $85,000, Full Fringe Benefits, 240 days

Summary

The School Safety and Security Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the safety, security, and emergency preparedness programs across the district. This role includes developing, implementing, and maintaining safety protocols and ensuring compliance with state and federal safety regulations. The Coordinator will act as the liaison between the district and external agencies such as local law enforcement, emergency services, and the Michigan State Police Office of School Safety. The position also involves supervising security operations, managing emergency response plans, and providing leadership to enhance the district’s overall safety and security posture. This position is a public safety focused position where a law enforcement background and training experience would be a priority.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Safety and Security Leadership

a. Develop and coordinate strategic and operational plans to mitigate, respond to, and recover from safety and security threats.

b. Oversee the district's safety technology systems, including video surveillance, door access controls, and emergency communication systems.

c. Monitor and update the district's Emergency Operations Plan and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

d. Train staff on safety procedures, including emergency responses, nonviolent crisis intervention, and first aid/CPR in coordination with existing staff.

2. Coordination and Liaison

a. Serve as the primary liaison between the district and first responders, including local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency medical services.

b. Coordinate with external agencies, such as the Michigan State Police and Homeland Security, to align district safety practices with state and federal requirements.

c. Support school administrators in developing and implementing safety protocols and crisis management plans.

3. Emergency Preparedness and Response

a. Plan, manage, and document all safety drills, including fire, tornado, and lockdown drills, ensuring compliance with state mandates.

b. Serve as the Incident Commander during district-wide emergencies, coordinating responses and resources.

c. Continuously assess the safety and security of district buildings, making recommendations for improvements.

4. Behavioral Management and Student Support

a. Provide behavioral management support in special education settings, including developing and implementing behavior intervention strategies.

b. Offer training and guidance to staff on managing student behavior and promoting a safe learning environment.

c. Collect and report data related to seclusion and restraint in compliance with district policies.

5. Community and Communication

a. Engage with parents, guardians, and the community to communicate the district's safety initiatives and emergency procedures.

b. Prepare and disseminate safety training materials and updates to staff, students, and the community.

c. Lead the district’s Safety Committee, facilitating meetings and ensuring follow-up on action items.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in safety, public safety, education, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience: 5 years of experience in a similar role, with a background in educational leadership, public safety, or emergency management.
  • Certifications: CPR/First Aid/AED Certification, Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Instructor Certification preferred.

Skills

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal safety regulations, including MIOSHA and ADA.
  • Ability to handle high-stress situations calmly and effectively, maintaining control during emergencies.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The role requires the ability to stand, walk, sit, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. The work environment may include both indoor and outdoor settings, with exposure to varying noise levels and potential safety hazards. Presentation to a variety of groups, including students, staff, and parents, would be necessary on a regular basis.

Special Considerations

The position may require occasional evening and weekend work. The employee must have reliable transportation for travel between sites and to meetings with external agencies.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $75,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
