POSITION SUMMARY
The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians Police Department (SSBMI PD) is committed to providing the highest levels of customer service to its residents and visitors, while constantly improving the quality of life that the tribal community desires and deserves. The SSBMI PD Crisis Negotiator plays a critical role in responding to critical incidents, which may include situations with suicidal individuals, hostage crises, or terroristic threats. This role involves the use of specialized skills to de-escalate conflicts, both during high-stress incidents and routine patrol duties, contributing significantly to day-to-day operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
In addition to regular patrol duties, the Crisis Negotiator will:
- Respond promptly to critical incidents, aiming to minimize danger and achieve a peaceful resolution.
- Engage in negotiations during crises, focusing on the safe release of individuals at risk and the apprehension of offenders, when applicable.
- Utilize active listening skills to establish rapport and demonstrate empathy with individuals in distress.
- Strive to understand the needs of individuals in crisis to identify the safest and most appropriate resolution path.
- Handle high risk situations that call for a trained crisis intervention specialist. Those situations can include but are not limited to the following:
- Barricaded Individuals
- Hostage Situations
- Suicide prevention
- Vehicle Hijacking, including Commercial Buses
- Terrorist inspired attacks
- High risk Warrant services
- General de-escalation
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be 21 or older.
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum of 6 months of employment with SSBMI PD.
- Must attend department approved crisis negotiation training within one year of accepting the position or have already received crisis negotiation training.
- Due to the nature of interactions with other employees and the public, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
- Must possess knowledge of security and patrolling techniques which will contribute to the safeguard of the Tribal community.
- High level of integrity and trustworthiness.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to possess a valid CPR/First Aid card.
- The ability to be unbiased and fair during the performance of duties and assignments; effectively and courteously work with community members, visitors and co-workers; always observing situations analytically and objectively.
- The ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
- The ability to resolve complaints, make inquiries, correspond with staff, regulatory agencies, employees, and members of the community.
- Good communications skills, including written and verbal, composing, editing and listening.
- Must meet the essential functions of the job classification to perform assigned duties safely and effectively.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment for long periods of time (if necessary).
- Ability to stay calm and composed while working under high stress situations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Education or experience dealing with individuals experiencing crisis.
- Crisis intervention training.
DRUG SCREEN
Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians requires the successful completion of a drug screening of all potential Tribal employees prior to being hired. The Tribe recognizes that the State of California has legalized the use of marijuana. The Tribe is located on federally owned trust land and complies with federal laws. Therefore, marijuana use is prohibited, and all drug tests will include a screening for THC.
Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians recognizes a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy, and employees will be required to sign a Consent to Drug and/or Alcohol Testing. Employees may be selected for alcohol / drug testing upon reasonable suspicion, and upon any/all accidents.
BACKGROUND CHECK
Candidates for this position will be subject to criminal and character background checks and fingerprinting prior to being hired. Verification of previous employment and education will also be conducted after the interview if an offer of employment is being considered.

NATIVE PREFERENCE
Preference in hiring is given to either the most qualified applicant or a Native American candidate who meets the minimum qualifications. When two (2) or more Native American candidates have comparable qualifications, the following order of preference shall apply: (1) Members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (2) Spouses or domestic partners (certified through Tribal Court) of members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (3) Parents of children of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (4) All other documented Native Americans; (5) All other applicants in accordance with Title 25, U.S. Code, Section 472 and 473. Applicants claiming Native preference must submit verification of Indian eligibility.
