Job Summary:

The Controller supports and leads the Accounting Department and accounting operations of the company, as well as performing other functions as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepares consolidation entries for local consolidation and parent company.
  • Reconciles intercompany balances with parent company and affiliates.
  • Answers requests for information from our parent company and Shinsho locations.
  • Assists in filing annual tax returns, use tax, and property tax returns.
  • Works with external auditors to prepare audit schedules, reply to audit requests, delegate audit requests to Accounting Department and review employee’s results before submitting audit requests.
  • Prepares annual transfer pricing computations.
  • Assists with requests from tax preparer (tax depreciation, sales by state).
  • Responds to external surveys and reports such as government requests and J-Sox.
  • Performs analytical review of monthly data and makes recommendations to upper management.
  • Provides information for budgeting and forecasts.
  • Delegates tasks within the department and regularly reviews employee’s tasks to ensure work is equally dispersed throughout the department.
  • Leads the Accounting team by assisting employees with help as needed, hosting regular meetings to increase communication, and reviews employee’s work for accuracy and efficiency and gives constructive feedback.
  • Oversees the department, such as handling management of payroll, training, recruiting, safety, performance management, and any other employee matters with the assistance of Human Resources.
  • Month end procedures, including but not limited to: loan payments and accrued interest; foreign currency computations for realized and unrealized FX; general ledger account reconciliations; balance petty cash and record disbursements; maintain fixed asset records, including tax deprecation; inventory cutoff for material in-transit; check shipment/receipt discrepancy; review estimated payable and check old items; review miscellaneous expense, income, and loss; review gross profit by customer; and prepare Financial Statements and reporting package.
  • Performs other duties from time to time as assigned by the management of the department. Job duties may change at any time with or without notice.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field is required.
  • At least 7 years accounting experience required.
  • At least 3 years management and supervisory experienced required.
  • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Account is highly preferred.
  • Significant experience with income tax, property tax and consolidation of entities is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Bi-lingual English / Japanese is preferred, but not required.
  • Must be able to effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline driven environment.
  • Proficient knowledge and use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel required.
  • Proficient knowledge of ERP systems required.
  • Month end closing in a publicly traded company and/or several subsidiaries preferred.
  • SOX compliance auditing experience preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time exempt position. Days and hours worked are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position may occasionally require longer work hours and weekend work.

This position reports to the Treasurer.

Travel:

Travel, if needed, is primarily during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be necessary.
