SUMMARY
The Campus Director of Therapeutic Recreation plans, organizes, directs, supervises and evaluates Therapeutic Recreation services provided at Sholom in order to achieve the department’s mission to meet the social, emotional, physical, cognitive and spiritual needs for each tenant and resident.
Salary
This position has a minimum salary starting at $65,520.00/year and will be based on experience in the role.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Direct the operations of the Therapeutic Recreation Department for the nursing home, assisted living and independent living tenants, including the supervision and development of Therapeutic Recreation staff.
- Lead and manage the Therapeutic Recreation department, participating in performance management and corrective action when necessary.
- Participate in the interview and hiring process to ensure quality therapeutic recreation services are provided.
- Organize staff education and ensure department compliance with applicable regulations.
- Develop and sustain therapeutic recreation programs appropriate to the needs of resident/tenant that include but are not limited to: social activities, indoor/outdoor events, outings away from the facility, spiritual and creative activities.
- Provide direction for new program development, new treatment techniques and equipment.
- Develop quality assurance criteria to measure program effectiveness, interpret data and implement program improvements. Ensure program compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
- Update assessment plans as needed based on assessment tools, observation of behaviors/interactions of residents/tenants and review of appropriate records as needed.
- Create and administer budget, including overseeing all Therapeutic Recreation related purchases.
- Administer, manage and ensure effective coordination of Therapeutic Recreation programs through inter-departmental collaboration.
- Serve on Quality of Life sub-committee of the Board.
- Participate in Campus Safety committee meeting or provide appropriate liaison.
- Participate in grant application process and ongoing evaluation of department needs.
- Assist with various other Therapeutic Recreation responsibilities as needed.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education, Experience and Certifications
- Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Gerontology, Psychology or Social Work or related field required.
- Three or more years’ management/leadership experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Certified by National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or eligible, preferred upon hire.
- One or more years’ experience working with individuals with dementia preferred.
- Three or more years’ hands on recreation experience preferred.
- Current certification in CPR preferred; upon hire if not certified, must obtain no later than 90 days from hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Flexible and productive in an environment with regular interruptions.
- Display high levels of customer service, responding promptly and thoroughly to the inquiries and needs of individuals both internal and external to the organization.
- Possess effective problem solving skills.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet, HRIS, and other applications. Must be skilled in database management and record keeping.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THIS JOB
Incumbent must be able to:
- Perform light work, with occasional or negligible lifting of objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Effectively communicate, including following oral and written instructions, in order to communicate with people inside and outside the organization.
- Able to effectively use office equipment to review and create information.
- Work at a desk for extended periods of time and perform long hours of work sitting at a computer.
- Frequently stand and walk to move around office/building repeatedly throughout the day.
- Able to work a flexible work schedule, including overtime, nights and weekends as required including attending events/meetings as needed.
- Able to obtain reliable transportation
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
- Use a variety of equipment related to recreation activities.
- Use telephone, computer and standard office equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment is indoors. The incumbent must be flexible about switching positions quickly in order to respond to the needs of residents, in responding to emergencies. May be at risk of exposure to chemicals used in cleaning and other potentially toxic material.
