SUMMARY, ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Athletic Director is an administrative position that reports directly to the President of Shorter College, and is responsible for: planning, directing, and coordinating the operations of the intercollegiate athletic program and compliance of the Title IX within the laws, policies, procedures and guidelines established by Shorter College, the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Supervise all activities related to the student athletes.
- Oversees fundraising in support of the athletic program with defined annual advancement goals; Implements and oversees major gift program including identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding a targeted portfolio of priority fundraising prospects together with athletics’ strategic priorities and objectives.
- Teaches class/es in Physical Education or Health/Safety or Sports Management or other courses in the field.
- Comply with all NJCAA rules and regulations. The National Junior College Athletic Association, founded in 1938, is the governing association of community college, state college and junior college athletics throughout the United States.
- Coordinate program's recruiting efforts by identifying and evaluating prospects, making initial contact with potential recruits, and selling the school and program to recruits that meet admission guidelines to achieve roster goals and build a competitive team.
- Maintain records of all recruiting contacts and keep Academic Dean informed of recruiting efforts.
- Assist with making regular contact with students and assist with needs for enrollment into college such as transcripts and class scheduling.
- Recruits, trains, hires and develop coaches for the respective athletic programs at Shorter College.
- Establish the team's competition and practice schedules which include but not limited to coordinating, locating, and scheduling of opponents, make travel arrangements for away games. Scheduling and assistance for opponents' practices in gymnasium and possible travel.
- Communicate (or delegate to respective coaches) with players' teachers and with student services regarding class, absences, and academic progress.
- Assist the Associate Dean of Student Services/Director of Communications with player and program information for publication on athletics web site and other media information.
- Coordinate and organize equipment.
- Frequent travel, including overnight and weekend travel, is required.
- Attend all required college events such as Commencement, Honors Convocation, Faculty/Staff Institute
- Attend departmental and other meetings convened by immediate supervisor
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in Exercise Science, Physical Education, or a related field. A Bachelor’s degree along with a minimum two years of experience in recruiting and coaching/training athletes or other relevant athletic experience, in lieu of the Master’s degree is accepted. Teaching experience at the college level is preferred. Knowledge of Title IX compliance.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Strong leadership and communication skills. Ability to inspire and motivate.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have a valid driver’s license and valid auto insurance coverage.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Able to work with and train student athletes. Able to work with and train coaches.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: This position may be expected to work on a college campus in a gymnasium.
